Palm Island Bull Shark and Fishin Report

Kind of a late report but I've been fishin down at my place on Palm Island in SW florida for 6 days straight. Last Thursday I drove down after my finals were over to celebrate one of the few ways I know how... go shark fishin. Two people I know could come out and that wasn't until thursday and my family wasn't comin out till Saturday, so plan was to fish for 24 hours by myself which I'm doin 90% of the time anyways. I went over and picked up some AJ carcasses and grouper from my buddy Capt. Travis Ormond over at Stump Pass Marina when he came in and headed across the ferry where I knew I would be stranded by myself for at least a day. I kayaked my bait out at 4pm and replaced baits at 9:30pm. Right at midnight, like every other shark I've caught, my 12/0 starts screaming and I'm pretty sure its a big shark since it ate an AJ. I fought the shark and got it to the beach. It ended up being a really fat 7'4" bull shark. Later, around 3:30am I got a slammer hit on a 40lb AJ carcass. I ain't ever had a shark hit as hard as that thing or pull as hard right off the bat but for some reason the shark dropped the bait while I was letting it run before setting the hook. At 3pm Thursday I stumbled back across the ferry and passed out on a dock connected to a vacant lot since I was dehydrated and had heat exhaustion. At 4:30pm James and Anthony come pick me up and we head back over to Stump to get some more AJ carcasses from Travis. Sometime that evening Anthony's (who left due to emergency) Avet got slammed by a big shark and it ended up getting tail wacked above the leader. I shark fished two more nights up till Tuesday and didn't get anything else. On sunday we ran offshore and caught grouper and snapper. Also on Saturday we went trout fishin and did good. On Monday my father, grandma and I caught about 75 trout in the morning in about 3 hours. I fished the rest of the day catching snook, trout, and mangroves off the boat. All in all I wish the sharks were biting more since I had some premium bait, but thats life. I know theres big sharks sitting off that beach, its just a matter of time before I get one.

Maybe next time James we'll get a shark while somebody is out there with me and I ain't soloin it. Thats the second time you've been out there with me and gotten skunked. I'm just now ordering the Lowrance HDS unit so I can't wait to get offshore next time with that new unit. And hopefully the gags will be bitin'. I got a few more spots out at 27 miles that we didn't go to and hold big fish.
