Nice Hammerhead off Hilton Head
We were targeting bull redfish and things were getting slow. I wasnt sitting on a solid shark hole, but I figured something big had to be in the area. I sent out a spanish mackerel and 15 mins later the line was pouring out. Guestimated it in the low 500's. Chased it a mile for about an hour and a half. I apologize in advance for the enormous pictures.

Nice color to that water that I always thought was filled with tannin. I grew up going to Jekyll, St. Simons, and Savannah. Saw a few big tigers growing up off the Jekyll pier, but can't remember a hammer. That's not to far north.
Nice catch
Not sure why, but it seems like St Simons, Savannah and Jekyll have a little dirtier water inshore. They have some great artificial reefs down south, though. When I fish king tournys I usually head down that way. I dont know why you didnt see any hammers. We get a good number....not like tigers, lemons or blacktips, but a decent amount. They seem small, though. Not like Fla. The average is probably 200-300....definitely no 1,000 pounders like Bucky Dennis battles.
Great report ,thanks for sharing. This time of the year and into December the scalloped hammers up to 11 feet or so are caught on the Carolinas by some brave land-based fisherman that yak baits out through some very rough surf so there probably even thicker out beyond the surfline .Thanks to Capt Chip for sharing with us this incredible place and it's winter sharking.I'm wondering how the shark fishing is during January and February?

I had no clue they caught scalloped hammers here this time of year. I wonder if its just in North Carolina, or northern SC? The sharks here are pretty much gone. In another 2 or 3 weeks it'll become a dessert, or the safest place to swim. Nov till March, our waters are pretty much shark free. 2 years ago a great white washed up dead on the beach, I think it was February. But it might have drifted hundreds of miles from offshore.
I went out twice last year in Dec and Jan with carcasses and chum. I set up at an offshore artificial reef looking for a great white or thresher....sat all day and never saw any signs of life. I've never heard of anyone hooking one, but I havent heard of anyone trying, either. Thanks for sharing the info on the scalloped, I had no idea.
