Mullet run blacktip-Sept 26,2008

We decided to try our old stomping grounds (south beach) after reading all the reports on the internet about the mullet run we were excited at the thought of watching the chaos of the mullet run.My friends who fish the beaches regularly confirmed it on Thursday afternoon.The report said huge schools of mullet on the beach getting tore up and the fishing was hot.That's all it took for us to go fish Saturday afternoon. Got to the beach 25 minutes before sundown set up as quickly as we could.Started chasing and casting a gotcha lure next to the schools of mullet as entire clouds of bait flew in the air whenever the sharks,tarpon,cudas,jacks and every hungry species of fish joined in on the frenzy.Ran back to base camp to kayak out my 9/0 with a small chunk of cuda just as the school was passing right in front of us.Got in the yak,paddled 50 yards and dropped the bait on the east side of the school.It was'nt 5 minutes and the 9/0 takes off with a typical blacktip fast hit,set up and caught a 5 ft blacktip after a short fight.Took out another bait and by now it was getting dark and soon had my second shark on but got cut off just as fast.With night allready upon us we started yaking out our big baits hoping for something bigger then a black tip shark.By now the smashing of mullet by the predators had subsided and we sat around with our family and friends, ate pizza, and drank a few beers.After dark the action went cold with the sharks.We did'nt get any more hits so we packed it in by 1 am.Overall it was nice to be back out on the beach,spend some time with family and shark fishing buddies and to once again watch the spectacle of the mullet run .
