Maryland/Delaware sea shore shark fishing with pics

Hey guys,

I had a great day of shark fishing on Sunday on Maryland and Delaware shores (we right right on the state line pretty much). For bait we either used rays/skates or big Tuna heads.

At about 4pm or 5pm on sunday we get our first hit on the baitrunner 6500 (SandTiger at 9 feet 2 inches). My buddy Ben did a great job fighting him on the light tackle. We had to clear a bunch of swimmers out of the water, like guy on the left side of this picture who thought we only had a big ray on. The shark hit a small chunk of Tuna belly.

The release of Sandtiger #1, He was 9 ft 2 Inches

At about 8PM we get out next hit on my penn 10/0. I quickly got the hook set and started to fight the 8 foot 1 inch Sand Tiger.

After a short fight i had the shark on the beach. Sandtiger are a strange shark to fight, the never run strait out. The run parallel to shore. All of the sandtigers we caught Sunday were hooked within 50 yards of shore, and never ran out past 50 yards. We would end up a feww hundred yards down the beach from were we hook it.

The safe release

Later that evening, maybe 9:30, we get another screeming hit. This time is was a dusky shark, the first on i have ever seen. They fight like hell.

Nice group shot

Safe release

AT about Midnight we got our next hit, this would be the last fish that i would be able to get pictures of because my camera battery died. This guy hit a big chunk of a southern stingray.

When we got him up to the shore, we realized who had been cutting off our flounder rigs, and crocker rigs all day long. Needless to say, we had to give this guy some significant dental work. Once we got him all cleaned up, he was no worse for the wear.

The after the dental work Pic.

All these shark were dehooked and released safely, and we ended up getting a few more that night, sux the camera died. The largest one of the day was the first one at 9 feet 2 inches.

All these sand tigers were over 8 feet long, and a few hundred pounds. I am terrible at estimating weight so everyone chime in and let me know what you think about the weights. It is not uncommon to catch 10 or more sandtigers in a single night on maryland beaches, and the great thing is, you can drive your car right on to the beach 24 hours a day. One dude that i was talking too caught a 13 foot sandtiger last year or the year before from the same beach.

If anyone is interested in a summer trip up to the maryland/delaware seashore let me know.

Happy fishing

Im really not that sure, but the people I were talking to said the most common catch is the sandtigers. They also get a few duskys, sandbars, and spinners. I didnt hear anything about bulls, hammers, blacktips or tigers

Very nice report Blake .CONGRATULATIONS on them big toothy critters ,,,,thanks for sharing with us. I'm impressed with the amount of sand tigers in that area.I'm also suprised that land based shark fishing is not a popular sport in Delaware with the amount of sharks that are on those beaches. Are they protected up there?

Sandtigers, duskys, and sandbars are all protected in Maryland and Delaware. The only species that they frequently get on the beach that is not protected is the spinner. The sandtigers seemed to be everywhere up here. We got probably 20 hits throughout the course of the day and night. Also we caught a massive southern stingray with a 6 or 7 foot wingspan at least. We released him because we didnt have a big enough cooler to handle all that shark bait lol.
