March 4 trip
Today was a challenge just to find a place to fish, searched for about an hour to find somewhere. I was hoping to find some open space and catch some fresh bait and put it out there before sundown. Finally I found a place and the few people that were around looked like they were about done cooking in the sun all day and ready to leave soon so I started to fish for bait and wasn't having much luck. I could see fish and birds and tried several different things/bait but it wasn't working. About an hour later my brother came down and he caught a few small ladyfish so it looked like we were in trouble. Then came a stream of mullet right inbetween the shore and 1st sandbar..I waded out with the cast net as far as I could to get em and I kept all the biggest ones I could get and released the rest. I ran a big one out about 150 yds, and 3 medium ones threaded onto 1 hook about 200 yds, and I cut a ladyfish in half and casted it out about 120 ft from the shore. I didn't have much optimism with all that mullet sittin' out there. I don't doubt it as a bait and I have caught some good snooks on mullet but my biggest shark ever on mullet was a 3 and a half ft nurse shark, until tonight. we got a good run and the glowstick fell to the ground. I let the fish eat it and my brother came runnin' over, then line stopped goin out so I reeled the slack I figured the fish just turned in and still had the bait..I was right, he headed back out again so I set the hook and he took off some line. I passed the rod to my brother and let him fight this one, then I went and got my tackle box and set it down by the glowstick so we'd be ready. It was a decent size blacktip about 6' and nice and thick. about an hour later my brother had to leave but the casted rod kept getting runs like crazy, while the bait 200 yds out I began to wonder if it still was on my hook. then I had a hookup on the casted rig and it felt like a decent fish..but I was fishing with straight 250# mono as leader and it lasted a couple minutes then I got bitten off..must have hooked the fish too deep. Later on after the casted rig stopped getting runs like crazy I brought em in and called it a night.
Not the greatest pics..we need to get our sh** together with this nighttime thing haha

Way to make it happen with limited bait,,,congratulations.Sounds like you need to buy a roll of #19 wire but i know it's not available everywhere so if you can find #12 which is sold at most of the better tackle shops you're better off with the 12 instead of the 250 lb mono. Thanks for the report John.

We've actually got a place here that carries all the Malin up to #23 I think, and they sell their packs of malin wire for half the price of bass pro. I had wire on the baits that were rowed out, its just that sometimes I like to fish a lighter setup in pretty close for whatever..big jacks, tarpon, or whatever and usually just use all mono. I always fish wire on the heavier rigs, but am thinking of buying some lighter malin wire like 80-100# and using that on the smaller rig rather than all mono like I have been.
