Lost 13 foot Panhandle Pier Monster Hammer
A good friend just told about something that happened at night , less then a week ago to a close friend of his on a Florida pier. The shark fisherman hooked a hammer over 13 foot ,they fought for close to 4 hours on a 6/0 wide with braid .The shark came close by the pier several times and then almost stripped them 3 or 4 times .At the end the very tired fisherman thouight they had the shark whooped and beat and when trying to beach it and they managed to go down on the sand and away from the pier and then the huge hammer reignited the after burners and swam back towards the pier and cut them off on the pier pilons. You can't stop a monster like that and it goes where it wants to go when it wants to .The only reason they did not get spooled to the knot is because they had braid and a wide 6/0 which to me still represents fishing under powered.Oh well maybe next time. .
What's the lesson learned boys and girls?Never bring a knife to a gun fight!!!
So close but yet so far,,,, a shark of a decade and they lose it at the end.I hope they now believe that bigger is better when talking about catching the biggest of sharks in Florida waters.Only the die hard fish right through the winter and this winter will see some incredible big fish caught by some incredible hard-core shark fisherman.stay tuned it will happen soon.

500 lb test would work!!!!
I would have a fishing partner get a hammer, and hammer down the star drag. Then tie me off to the nearest tree so that i don't get yanked into the surf ,,,as i hang on for dear life .
ha ha ha ha ha!!!

I think that is the one I told ya about huh Will? If it is, it was on a pier in my local area. They was actualy still on the pier when the fish swam under the pier. They was not far from the beach though. Every thing else is correct. They are both seasoned fishermen and one of the guys helped land the 1150lb mako
which was fly gaffed here at navare on a boat fishing for cobia. Both the guys said no less than 12' and theyr discription of the dorsal fin says 13'. Theyr problem was the length of theyr leader. When fishing a pier ya should have a leader atleast as long as the pier is tall, so ya can put a snap roap on the leader. Put it on a hand line and it can still go under and be brought back. I have seen hooks pull out cause of the clip roap but without, the fish would have been lost any way. Dont tie it to the rail on a bigun cause the waves will let ya pull the fish out of the water and pull the hook. A monster like that will make ya glad to drag that heavy ole 16/0 and unlimited class rod around cause when it is going under ya can hold the spool, sit on the butt and put some real pressure on. That rod Travis built has a beautifull wrap and is well built, but I feel like the 80w has too much drag for it. It looks like a 80lb seeker. I think I may get to see it splinter apart under navare pier. For when i grab the spool and sit on the but with some 150, upps there goes the long beach rod and my fish. I may have to put my 9/0 on it or it may be doomed. Its been slow, Joey has fished atleast 5 nights a week for a month or more and i have been going 2 nights a week. Sean and i released a 7' sand bar the other night but it has been slow shark fishin. Joey has been persistant, and we all know where that will get him.

The 14/0 is something you need for the biggest and baddest sharks around. There are so many times that I wish I was fighting on something as small as a 6/0.
