With winter well and truly set amongst us in gold coast now, after an unbelievably good summer bullshark season over, our team decided to try our luck one coming weekend, as we were aiming to make another shark fishing video,So with that in mind dates were set for the coming Saturday night, rain hail or shine we would fish and try however we could to catch just one shark. Saturday came before we even realised it was upon us, we starting packing out gear with high hopes. After quickly catching some mullet (with two XXL ones) we made out way to our shark fishing spot. We ran 5 rods this night, as the temperature had dropped rather dramatically to 5 degrees Celsius that night, we were hoping against hope that some little shark would still be around. The scarce bit of light we had remaining quickly vanished, and it was getting colder by the minute. I was really starting to regret saving ten minutes this morning by not packing a tent by now. Anyway, at 630pm we had our first run on the 6/0 senator which provided an unspectacular tussle for approximately 15 minutes but turned out to be a massive 217cm shovel nose ray (7foot 3inch)! Photos were taken and the ray swam off nice and easily, but as I pushed him out he splashed his tail and soaked me! Now Im soaking wet in the cold, Brilliant I thought. Approximately 3 hours later one of the 9/0s started to slowly run, hooks were set and again the shark barely put up a fight, surrendering to the power of the senator. This shark taped out to be a 166cm (5ft 5 inch) bullshark. The hooks were removed and shark was released. Another hour passed and then the spinning reel we put out came to life. The line was eventually snapped after a 15 minute fight. It came to be about 1am now and then the other 9/0 screamed. This one was extremely quick pick up, and unfortunately the bait was dropped. I reeled it in to find half of one of my XXL mullets. This only left one 6/0 with bait still out in the water so I made the decision to redeploy my 9/0 with half the mullet as bait and boy am I glad I did! After I redeployed my 9/0, I came back in and sat down. The very second I sat down my 9/0 started to slow tick over. By the time I got to the rod however it had dropped the bait so I patiently kneeled beside it, hoping for the shark to pick up the bait again. A minute passed and the senator came to life again, but this time alot more convincing. The hooks were set and I was blessed with weight on the other end. After a solid first run I lost all weight and thought a hook may have pulled and I got pretty pissed off. However as I slowly reeled in tension started to come back to the rod and I went from being so angry to the happiest man on the earth as I again felt that lovely feeling of a shark pulling drag from a senator! This fight wasn't over! The shark was caught and was 218cm hammerhead (7ft 3inch). The other 6/0 was untouched all night. For us this was an awesome night that exceeded all expectations as we normally don't catch much on a cold front and therefore we weren't expecting much. Our hopes were to get just one shark but ended up with three and two pretty good ones at that.
