Friday 2/4/11 blacktips ,and the big one that got away
Went to the beach after work with my buddy stevie, I only brought 2 bluefish for bait since I'm trying to fill up the freezer for the btc, the yak and the 9/0. I knew there was a big hammer around at this spot so i brought the harness and made sure I had a regular rig. Paddled a small chunk on my 9/0 and stevie's 50 hoping for some tips. About 45min goes by and I'm thinking of leaving since I had to be at work at 6am then my 9/0 starts a nice steady roll, let him eat and crank down tight to burry the circle hook in the corner of the mouth and immediatly the tip starts shooting at me, came tight for a sec then he kept charging the beach and the fish ended up 50yrds north of our rods on the beach, popped the hook out and let the 6-7' and chunky tip go. Start to tie a new brick on when stevies rod get hit, his fish decideds to run out and after a couple minutes another tip the same size hits the beach, get her unhooked on revived and stevie start paddling the next set of baits. After 10min or so I see the tip bounce on my rod then go slack so I'm think alright there he is before I can get to the rod the 9/0 roars to life for some reason I let him eat even though it's a small palm sized chunk of bluefish then reel tight it felt like I had tied my 9/0 to my truck and drove down my street, I clip into the harness as the spool starts looking emptier by the second then he finds the reef and it's over, he dumped 75-100yrds off the real in 15 seconds or so. I was pissed but I probably would've had to tie into the 50. It's fish like these that keep me coming back for more I thought the two 8' bulls i hooked this past year felt heavy this fish was something else, that hammer better be ready for the btc cause I got something for his ass in round 2.

Congratulations on the tippers.Any pics?Sounds like you hooked the right one, might be time to find higher ground ,a longer rod possibly or heavier mono could turn the odds in your favor ,,,,a bigger reel would def help too .Nice story thanks for sharing with us Nick.

no pics will, sorry. Only had our phones that don't have a flash. As for the hammer I hooked it on my 80-130 it's cut down but still 8' 6" so it's long enough just need heavier mono and a bigger reel, won't be getting him during the btc though. Stuff came up at work where my boss needs a knee replacement so he won't be in the week of the btc so my buddy can't get off the days he needs to since he's a manager which sucks we were both looking forward to it, and everyone else is too busy to fish it.
