Fishing with the legend (catching a SANDTIGER)

(@941sharker)
Honorable Member

Started out with hammer coming to pick me up to go catch bait for the blacktip challenge.
We head north to one of our fav. spots to snagg some cownose rays an take to the east coast for our tourny. After snagging what we needed for bait we head to the east coast (sebastion inlet).J.D sent out half of a cownose,jd gets a small hit an the fish drops the bait. A few caught snooks an one was nice enough to give me the carcess for bait,I cut off the head an sent it out, i go to the truck to get sleeping bags an as soon as i get back i get a good run on my 14/0 with the snook head.I set up an the fish is feeling like a hush puppy i make fast work of the fish till it comes to the pier an start really fighting up current. Now i know this is no lil shark i pump an pump till i see some of the fish, hammer yells" its a lemon!!! He goes 2 the truck to get the camera an i see the fish's jaws i start thinkin to myself that this looks like no lemon i have ever seen.I tell JD when he gets back look at this things jaws an as soon as he sees them he starts yelling its a sandtiger!!! The tide is still going out an the fish is getting stuck in the pillings, with only 30min left in the outgoing tide we tie off the leader to a rope an leave the fish in the water till the tide changes. As soon as the tide changed i walk the fish down to the rocks to get the length (8ft2in.) (275lb.))an we got the best pics we could without removing the fish from the water. The fish was released an swam away like a champ.Fishing with Jd hammer im always learnin his many tricks, its always making me a sharper more hard core hunter. Were ready for the BT challenge! 8-)

In club history there has only been one Sand Tiger caught and these two fine anglers the master(JD) and the student (Aaron) pulled it off back in February while fishing Sebastian Inlet. One of the best of 2009,,,,again CONGRATS !!

That's right you're only the second angler in club history to catch a sand tiger although outside of Florida. Thanks to shark hunters like Blake Smith the South Florida Shark Club is growing stronger and branching out into different areas representing different parts of the globe. Thanks to all the new shark club members who have become part of our shark fishing brotherhood. Thanks for your contributions, your participation and for recognizing the value of our involvement in land-based shark fishing and the value of our history.

It was awesome representing the South Florida Shark Club up here in delaware. If it were not for the techniques i have learned from you guys, i would never have had shark fishing success up here in delaware. Believe it or not, there are people up here in maryland/delaware that know of the South Florida Shark Club, and get some great info from our web site. For those of you who havent seen it, here is a great video of an early morning sand tiger catch in Delaware at the Indian River Inlet. I caught this one just at sunrise

You know you put in some time to catch one of those bad boys! The one shark that you never think you will catch LOL!!

while fishing the 09 shorebound this year I went to tailrope what we thought was a fat lemon and then said WTH! ITS A SANDTIGER!
I never thought i would ever even see one in person....im pretty sure this one was full of pups too and was over 400#.....

Thats one fish you guys will never forget and maybe the closest we might get to a mako LOL...same family.
