Feb 10th, Lost the big one.
Fishing in Boca Grande with Dan (DanTheMan) and Alec (islandboyalec). We made our journey to the beach. Upon arrival we built a fort to keep the rain, and set up the rods. All of us had mullet for bait, first thing to hit the beach...a small jewfish, so we released him back into the water without any pictures. After the disgust of catching yet another jewfish...(Which it seemed like they were the only things in the pass) another reel went off except this fish was fighting alot more. After a good 15 minute fight we heard a jump, Yes...another one of our tarpon caught on #19 wire and a 14/0 hook, did we mention it's "hard" to catch tarpon in the pass? Yet we have had a good 5-6 in the winter on shark rigs, everyone should try our method instead of spinning tackle and mono lol. So we released him back into the water, another friend of ours descided to bring us a amber jack for bait which alec and i decided to split. After 10-15 minutes after dropping the bait in the water my 12/0 starts screaming... we ran over and grabbed it. i gave it to dan who was extremely eager to do the running man all the way to the light house. Halfway through setting hook he was turned around and dragged a little bit, the shark was actually able to pull him on the sand for a few seconds, he then gave it back to me because there's no way in hell that it was gonna pull me anywhere (i'm a large kid). I followed him all the way down the beach but noticed he was going to the old pier which would cut me off instantly so i decided to do the Mark (sit and apply so much drag he would turn), but when he did he charged the beach...after i gained my line back i didnt feel anything but bait. After reeling it in and analyzing it we saw that it had no teeth marks on it except a few by the fin meaning it had to of swallowed it whole, we have our ideas of what it was and why it got unhooked but tell me what you think. I also picked up a Harrington 555 this weekend for joe to rebuild so thats great. Time to go back next weekend to hook up with the monster yet again. Sorry for no pictures.
Lol, now I have a technique named after me? I also run the opposite way of the shark when it is going towards pilings and such, but these are things I learned from the older fishermen. Sounds like you guys had fun anyways, I would be happy with a jewfish or tarpon landed. From the size of the bait I'm guessing you had a nice tiger, but I wasn't there I don't know.
Just an average fisherman.
