Cold Weather Pensacola Sharkin

While many of you decided to stay home and perhaps take in some NFL Football action,
we choose to return to our 2nd home, the beach. We wanted to try and brave the chilly
and windy conditons in an attempt to try our luck one last time this year. We had just
recently recieved some fresh tags and with a Monday holiday there was just no keeping
us at home.

Jeff "Fangman" and his girl were going to be headed that way as well to run a few errands
and they would meet up with us over the weekend.

We loaded up and headed back east to the white sands of Pensacola in search of our
last big toothies before winter sets in and drops the temps in the water below desirable
conditons for our gray suited friends. We expected North mostly North winds for the
duration of the trip, mother nature had other plans.

Day 1

We arrived in Pensacola around 9:30 ish on Saturday morning stopped picked up some bait
from a local takcle shop and headed to a location to meet up with Bill "Firedawg" to
try our luck at catching some sheeps. As we broke in the morning it was apparent that
the only fish to be caught was of a different sort. Here was our only catch, caught by
Bill at the 1st location.

No Comment, however there was much grumbling and chuckles on the peir about BCS game.

We moved over to the Bob Sykes pier only to find it loaded with local fisherman that
seem to have cornered the market on "How to catch Sheephead". My wife and I watched
as they seemed had all the secrets cause we couldn't catch one to save our life. Same
bait, same rigs but just down the bridge different result. We pondered grabbing their
fresh catches and running to the truck :-), however there were just to many of them and
some of them looked pretty quick.

After about 2 hours we threw in the flag and asked where we could buy some fresh sheeps
and were pointed to the local seafood market and off we went. BINGO.

My wife and I got to the beach about 2 PM and got everything set up and baits in the water
just as the 49ers kicked off ball to the Saints. We sat listened to the game as we
waited on Jeff and waited for the sound of drag coming from a line.

Jeff arrived and we got him set up and he decided to wait until morning to run his lines
out since we didnt have much action.

Then it Happened, however it was only a small bait rod. Few minutes later I landed a nice
size drum, we would call him bait.

I cant beleive the Saints had 5 turnovers, Really... It really depressing to hear my beloved
Saints continue to give the ball away and we really needed something to lift our spirts.

With some fresh drum Jeff deciede to run out a bait, Cold and winds now coming from the south
west, temps approaching mid 40's we got Jeff prepared to kayak in the chill conditions.

Intorducing KAYAK MAN

THE SOUND OF THE FIN_NOR RANG SWEET THROUGH THE WINDY NIGHT AIR!!! FISH ON!!!

Jeff handed the rod to my wife, our most recently HOOKED sharker!! Even though she says she
not, she is at least snagged or why else would she in at the beach at night in 15 mph winds with
temps quickly approaching the high 30's

Here is a few pics.

We tagged the Sandbar and set him free!!!

We had a few short and quick hitters but nothing esle landed for the night.

Sunset... Saints had 4 turnovers by this point...

Day 2

If you don't have one of these umbrella's you should stop reading and go get one right now,
Serious.

After enduring south west wind gust up to 25 mph for most of the night, the wind moved back
around to the North for most of the day. The surf calmed down nicely although was a little
dirty from the strong south winds the night before. We checked baits and Jeff ran them back out
and the wait was on.

I was able to catch a 31 inch red during the day that was released. We tryed shrimp, fiddler crab
floating baits, sinking baits and today we didn't even get a turn on the reels. There was nothing
in the surf.

My wife and I went and tryed our luck on catching dinner. Here were our catches!!

This little guy kept puffing and puffing, we thought we was gonna explode!!

The Catch!!! and some fish :D

Dinner Yum!!

Today however this would be the only shark on the sand.

We packed up about 8pm and headed back to the big easy. Overall it was a great trip even
though we only caught a few fish. I'd do it again tomorrow... or at least next weekend :D

Here are a few pics from trip.

Congratulations on the sandy and thanks for sharing your adventure with us.
Fishing and camping on a desolate beach during the winter with a wife to keep you warm in a tent is the ideal way to spend a night this time of year and the fresh cooked fish is just icing on the cake..
