Cold and burned, fished and learned, another trip to the keys
Plans were made earlier in the week, Friday came, Achot (soviet sharker 305), JD Fagan (JD553), and I (slasherx4) made our long journey to the keys. We decided on seven mile despite our lack of bait; all we had was a big jack and two ladyfish.
I rigged up for tarpon and Achot and JD rigged up for snapper, Achot got a nice snapper and lost a few more, JD lost some fish, and I jumped 3 tarpon and caught a rare species of shark on a snapper rigging.
The only shark rod that got hit was Achot's, he set up and missed, rehooked the ladyfish and put it back down, by this time a large electrical storm had come over our heads and I lifted my rod to go fish for tarpon again and the tip buzzed wildly, I put the rod down and went under our fort.
About 15-20 minutes after we all settled under the fort from the continuous, slow, steady, rain, Achot's 12/0 went off again, this time, with multiple sets, that shark was hooked up and little Achot was slammed onto the rail, we quickly got our equipment and assisted Achot who was fishing between the two bridges, this was no small shark, It dumped 400-500 yards of 80lb test off of the reel in a short matter of time, with a 3-man team effort, we fought the shark between the bridges and gained line only to loose it again shortly after when the shark took out line again. We were stuck out there somewhere so we tied up the rod and hoped that at the tide change we could bring in the shark. We woke up a little too late to check on the rod and the line had gotten slack and went around another piling on the new bridge. We pulled back as far as we could and the line gave in. It was over.
But the trip wasn't over, for some reason the weather and bad luck didn't deter us, JD caught a decent sized Southern ray in the morning and we decided to head over to old wooden on the outgoing tide hoping that by the time it changed we would have a decent amount of shark bait. Sadly, the continuous rain hit us once again, this time with our tiredness we just decided to leave while we still could. Did I mention the locals on no name are really interested in good looking tackle? watch your stuff or you could be the next victim of theft or worse.
Now for pics and videos
We set up shelter before the rain hit
after the rain and wind got worse we had to revise it
Warning, protect your spots, little Russian snapper slayers are coming after all of your snappers
16 inch grover
Rare shark!
spotted nurse shark ate my snapper bait
has anyone ever caught one of these?
no comment...
Clicker screams, Achot runs out of the tarp and leaves a trail of blankets and clothes behind
shark on
not a nurse
Getting burned
click the video
as much drag as you can possibly put on 80lb test
click the video
by this time the reel was hot
click the video
this is what it takes to keep that line off the other bridge
Cat in the hat!
our last effort
Till' next time folks.

Good stuff guys as always but Mark tell Aschot 80 lb test on a 12/0 on a bridge is a Big NO NO!! On the bridge I would steer him towards 130 lb test or even 200 lb test to deal with the ABRASIVENESS OF THE light poles---then just tie him down to the bridge with strong ropes or bungy cords
.When fishing Long key or Seven Mile bridge (out going tide)--you just know the chances are great that the shark will swim your line into the light poles. I know there is only so much we do from a bridge to turn a big shark but that reel was nowhere near 'burn' mode but rather 'rolling' along ,reel still close to full and in the video the rod looked like it was almost pointing straight at the fish.Teach em to sit on the rod butt, bend at the knees lower the reel towards the ground and BEND THAT ROD even if it means getting lifted off the ground a bit!!
A three man team can challenge a big shark on these bridges if your tackle and rigs are the right kind and your techniques are well honed . Thanks for the report I always look forward to reading them and seeing the YOUNG GUNS getting better and better.

After the fight I actually thought of a better position to have the rod to put some pressure on a fish in the lower railing, it might have been too uncomfortable, but using the side of the rectangular hole we fished in to put pressure on the rod sideways would have been the only solution, but for 80lb test there was already a good amount of pressure on the drag, and the reel was warming up, it was all we could do.
When a small half of a ladyfish is put down for bait you just aren't really fishing with your monster rigs, the smartest of big sharks eat the littlest of baits, as I have experienced and seen from my 10ft tiger that ate half a bluefish, zach's (from team bullbuster) 11ft hammer that ate a 9inch bonita, JD Fagan's 9ft estimated bull that ate a carcass from a 5lb kingfish and got stuck on a trap out there, and the biggest hammer I have ever seen 13+ slurping up tiny blue runners that it could get to from the pier.

Awesome videos..nothin' like seeing a big fish pullin' drag off a big reel, my favorite kind of fishing video to watch. You never know what is going to end up eating a ladyfish..anything from snook to a man eater could end up eating it, part of what makes fishing exciting.
that was a fun trip guys. its tough fighting a shark under the new bridge, but you did a great job fighting that big shark. we will be back to get those bridge monsters, just keep fishing and you wil get that big boy. thanks for posting up this report mark it looks great, you do an awesome job. congrats on that rare species of shark mark, that thing was cool.
