bummer!!! sanibel causeway
Man we lost a monster shark tonight!got to the causeway at around 7:30, had a very limited amount of bait; a mullet, redfish carcus and a mojarra. Soon after we arrived someone caught a small stingray and we jacked it from them
. So we rig up and kayak the bait out. Its not exactly easy getting in a kayak off of a 5 foot ledge in choppy water in the dark.. as i drop the redfish carcus off about 100 yards on th 14/0 then the stingray out a little shorter on the avet 80 sonn after sitting down to rest and eat my taco from taco bell the 14/0 starts screaming i set the hhook and the shark starts bookin. whenn it slows down i tighten up and try to gain some line, as soon as i put pressure on the fish it darts for the piling something i was dreading. i pull with all my might to try to get it away from the piling but it was useless it was wrapped. so i decide to wait it out and maybe it will move away. i wait for about 15 minutes and finally the line loosenns and i can feel it swimming off. so as soon as i pulled it away from the piling it ran again but this time popped me off. So i reel in whats left and instead of the main line being ripped up that fish cut straight through the weedeater line. (the worst part is ill never know what i had on it could have been a big goliath or bull. i have no idea.) Im heart broken at this point just extremely pissed off
. then i remember we have a mullet left and i kayak it out. Shortly after getting back the avet makes a couple runs then goes slack and for no apparent reason i lose 100 yards of line. i dont care what anyone says that was 100 lb momoi and ill never use it again. time to respool... and right after that the 14/0 runs again and stops but nothing is on. ended up just eating the mullet right off the hook. so mad! all we have left was a lttle whiting that i cut in half and casted out on my heavy spinning outfit. About 5 minutes later the spiining rod screams and as soon as i put pressuer on whatever it was the braid snaps . 65 lb power pro doesnt just snap like that id ont know whats been up ive been having the worst luck lately. But whatever i leave the causeway at about 11:30 nice and pissed off.<img class="go2wpf-bbcode" src=" http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5143/566 ... 3a8802.jpg" alt="">

That's because you Jacked the stingray from them
LOL
Try setting up away from the bridge so you can angle out and away your line to avoid the pilings when you hook your monster.Sharks will usually swim with the current unless the tide is getting ready to shift and the water starting to reverse direction but the Jewfish will and do tend to go under the bridges and into their lairs(caves) regardless of current speed or direction.Thirty foot leaders and 200 lb test is mandatory for this kind of fishing,,,,,,,Good luck.

I dont know much about weed eater line, but i know it wasnt specifically made for fishing, it may be very strong, but i dont think it would have as good a fray resistance as mono or flourocarbon, i have never in my life seen a fray that nasty with mono or flouro, i have onyl seen frays like that from braid and dacron, i thought that was a pic of red powerpro at first.
Just an average fisherman.
ya the weedeater line has normally held up but ive never gotten wrapped before so that just goes to show. But it did last for like ten minutes of tug-of-war around that piling, something that i doubt would have been able to be done wth mono. then again ive never fished mon leaders so i cant really say.
That sounds like a big jewfish to me...anyways, save the weedeater line for trimming your hedges and get some 400-600 lb mono for a shock leader. I've never seen mono fray anything like that either..its tough to fish spots like that for big fish its a high risk of getting cut off, good luck out there ![]()
