i picked up my friend and headed to big carlos i had no bait so i bought a bonita and a blue crab. i drifted the bonita out on my 80w and dropped a blue carb straight down and a spadefish that some guy caught on my 6/0 live in the pilings. an hour passes by and a goliath sounds the clicker on the 6/0 and i set the hook he pulls hard and spits the hook. Another hour goes by and the crab gets picked up and its a nice black drum.

while i land the black drum my friend hooks into another goliath but it ran into the pilings.
were sitting around talking when a douchebag in a flatsboat come from under the bridge at full speed and runs into my 80ws line, i run full speed to my avet and as soon as i reach it the boat spooled it to the knot and my 550 dallar custom gatorglass and avet 80w fly into the water. right then i drop to my knees, i cant believe what had just happened. The asshole in his flats boat was doing something completely illegal that the landbased fisherman has to pay the price for. I honestly think we should do something about these sonsabitches that dont give a crap about anyone elses fishing situations. the beaches too, they fly along the beaches about ten feet away from shore when theyre supposed to be on the other side of the swim buoys. ugh this gets me so heated, but i guess theres nothing you can do.  :x :x

That sucks, but there is something you can do, it's a long shot, but it has worked for JD Hammer with a few of his overboard reels. If you can get a boat, troll a christmas tree of treble hooks along the bottom and see if you can pick up the line, if you can't get a boat try casting various angles from the bridge and beach if you think it's close enough. Determine if the tide could have swept it anywhere, etc. OR if you have diving equipment... good luck

Just an average fisherman.

Damn man that sucks. I had to compete with the boats last night off the beach. They were cruisin right off shore lookin for bait and i had to tell them to go out farther before they ran over my lines.

This used to happen to my grandfather all the time, he told me when you spool
your reel up with line tie a single knot at the very bottom.
This way if you have a large fish on and you need to splice into another
reel you can just simple pull the line and the knot will slip out very easy,
so you can bloodknot it to the other line fast. I guess this would work if a boat hits the line also, then you just loose the line not the gear.

NEVER fish without tieing ur rod off to the bridge!!!!!!!! Lesson learned..sorry abt ur luck.. not trying to sarcastic... Bet that guy didn't get far before his boat stopped due to the line wrapped around the lower unit!!! Bet that guy might think twice abt flying under bridges..

Dadgum dude that sucks. Make sure you tie your reels to the railing whenever on a pier/bridge and always have a knife on you. I regret it every time I go down to bonita beach/ft. myers area. Like you said all the stupid boats that run on plane 15 feet away from the beach and with no running lights. Last time I was there I couldn't let all my lines slack in time and a boat hit my 12/0 but I got to it soon enough to cut the line... lost like 200yds and it blew up the left sideplate which had to be replaced.

I lost a 14:0 and limaglass rod do to a shark pulling it over from a backlash reel at seven mile and jump in. My frinds had to pull me to shore. By the time I made it back it was pitch dark. No luck on the reel . Sorry to here you lost everything.

thanks guys im definitely leashing my rods for now on. dan, if you could do that i would really appreciate it, you would have to go on a slack tide because the current really rips in there i know where it was dropped but i dont know how far it was dragged, i was casting a weighted treble all night and it was no use.

I expected this post to be about a fight with a big shark, really sorry to hear about this. I've seen boaters pull that same crap on that bridge they go through the pilings instead of the fenders, and on the gulf side of the pass they haul ass 30 mph on the beach side of the sandbar, and do the same when going through other no wake areas. All you can do is just not tie the line to the spool. I tie a loop in case I get spooled by a fish, and just wrap it around. They can keep my line and seize their engine up with it and then blow it out..I've seen it done with 80 lb braid before. In fact I hope next time out some idiot runs over my 12/0 because I need a fresh spool of line on that.

That sucks man, I am sorry to hear that. I almost had it happen from the beach a few years ago.
