AUSTRALIA - Kayak Shark Fishing

Headed out up the Brisbane River in the yak yesterday morning. I was on the water by 6am and within half an hour I was anchored up at location and two baits are out.

I had baits out for less than an hour before the free-floated catfish fillet took off with a screaming run. I free spool the reel and let it have the bait while I clear my other rod out of the way. Bail arm goes over and the hookup is strong. A good 10 minutes later I have this 120cm bully yak side going ballistic. I get a tail rope on and tow it to shore and off with the tail to bleed it out away from the water. It's been a while since I've had a feed of flake. (sorry for the blurry photos, I had water on the lense and didn't realise until later).

I decided to clean the jaws for a bit of fun.

It is currently getting cleaned up by some hungry ants. After a few days of drying I will then bleach it.

Forget the ants for the jaws ,drop them in hydrogen peroxide.

I left the jaw with the ants for 24 hours (even though it would have taken much less). Came back to not a single ant on it and a spotless clean jaw. Now just going to leave it to dray for a few more days before bleaching it.

Listen to the voice of experience....the hydrogen peroxide commonly sold at any Pharmacy or Major supermarkets will leave the jaws spotless and very important ODORLESS .Good luck with the bleach it will turn them slightly yellowish and the smell of the bleach will last for years. After leaving the jaws in the Peroxide for two days ,wash them off and put them in a 5 gallon bucket with fresh water ,then place two sticks cut to the size of the jaws(top to bottom) and (side to side) leave them out to dry for a week and they will be bone white and odorless.

What Will was saying was explained very long ago by a shark researcher that had tried every method possible. Bleach can actually ruin the entire jaw. JDHAMMER tried bleach one time and all of the teeth fell out.

Just an average fisherman.

Don't worry I ended up getting a small bottle of hydrogen peroxide and just painted it onto the jaw with a paint brush. It has evened out most of the colour variations, which is great.

Turned out great in the end. Look forward to doing a few more in the future.
