A couple from my Pensacola Trip
Things finally lined up for me to make a trip up to Pensacola. A seven hour drive to go fishing for a Florida boy was tough, when my beach is 15 minutes away. Talked to Troy and Bill, and both said it was a good time to come up, so loaded up the car and met my classmate from St. Pete and we hit the marina for some fresh bait and got to the beach.
The surf was pretty rough Friday night, reminded me of the East Coast a bit, probably the worst I've experienced in the gulf so far. We got two rods out and wind and undertow had the lines far left, but the big spiders held pretty good.
The 50W wasn't out for more than 15 minutes, when it got a nice roll. Put the reel in strike and the circle stuck and the fight was on. This was my second shark on Seeker 80-130, I like the rod so far, super soft tip, but shuts down about halfway for the bigger sharks. Fight was pretty quick and a Blacktip was on the beach.

Dehooking the LP 20

Tipper

For the next couple hours, we would get little runs here and there, plenty of blacktips tearing off the ribs of the snapper.
Around 1, the 14/0 with a cownose had a solid pickup. Wanted my friend to finally catch a landbased shark, he's came out on several trips and for some reason, hadn't had a chance yet, so I gave him the rod. Little did he know, it was a 8 foot rod with no harness, not very comfortable, especially dragging him over the 6" inch sandbar 40 yards out. When I went to grab the shark, I saw a school of remora on the tail of the fish. At least 20, weird for such a small shark, you can see half of them on the video.

Workout on the Barrett Rod

Chubby Little Bull

We slept the majority of the following day. Got some fresh bait and hit the beach. Surf was much more agreeable Saturday night. Got the rods out, same story. A run 10 minutes after the bait was dropped. Made short work of another blacktip, one of the few daytime sharks I've gotten.

Little guy hit the biggest snapper we had.

Again, a lot of little runs until about Midnight. Troy and his daughter stopped by and we chatted a bit when the 50W took off again, was a good run and went to tighten up the circle and didn't catch. Bummer. Reeled up and Troy gave me some pointers on my rigs, hopefully the changes will produce more sharks.
A couple hours later, another solid run which was dropped, and reeled in an empty hook.
Not the greatest trip of all time, but I had a good time fishing a new area and got some sharks on the sand and made sure my buddy got addicted to our sport. So all in all, a great trip for me.
Until next time,
Chris
