Went out 2 nights ago to ft desoto brought my lucky 12/0 and my brand new 14/0 so we float out the baits and sit down. in about 30 mins my 12/0 goes off i miss the first hook set so put it back down, sure enough he comes back i got him that time fought him and and brought him down to the beach to find i just caught my first DUSKY! So we go back down into the end and about 5 minutes after getting there my 14/0 goes screaming so i set hook and start fighting we all thought i had a big boy but the trailer hook got him in one of the fins so he came in sideways and so i got my second ever dusky! oh yeah i hooked the second at 10:20 and you got be off the pier and out of the park at 11. so we were hurring we had to walk both because we forgot the gaff.

So if you had your gaff you were going gaff a protected species? I hope you released the two you caught.

It may be sandbar sharks. they are hard to tell apart. the sandbar has a dorsal that stands up high and is placed a little closer to the head. The sandbar has huge fins. Even if it ant it may need to be. figure out what it is for shure and be carefull what ya inflict upon ya self. Looks like a sand bar to me.

Yeah I wouldnt have known they were duskys till i got home and looked at pictures of them plus its kinda hard to walk a thrashing shark 300 yards on a pier. Im not gonna cut it and leave 15 foot of cable in the shark. Yeah im positive they were duskys ive caught sandbars they have a more circular tip of their dorsal.

Congratulations on your catch.I think it's highly unlikely but not impossible to catch 2 dusky sharks back to back .They are rare nowadays and more so from shore.Do you have any pictures because that would help us ID them right away. One way to tell the sandbar is the ridge that runs from the tail to the dorsal fin.The dorsal fin in sandbar sharks is very wide. The dusky shark has longer pectoral fins then most all other sharks and a slightly more pointier snout then the sandbar. The sand bar is usually a tight compact shark usually 5-7 1/2 foot long whereas the dusky is a long slender creature(typically)growing to 12-13 feet at it's maximum. The dusky can hit close to 1000 pounds where the sandbar just over 200 .Hope that helps looking forward to the pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Ps What's worse walking a shark 300 feet to take out the hooks (wear on the angler)or
or gaffing a shark (destruction of the shark)with the intention of hauling it up on a pier to remove the hooks/leader to save the walk on the angler?
If you want to help your shark LIVE then please don't gaff it,,,,,,,just my 2 cents!!

They were duskys at first we though they were bulls but when i finally got them to the beach they were lighter colored and had a pointier nose and had a huhe dorsal fin for their size and ive caught probably 8 sandbars i know what they look like.

Post everything without fear of retribution but stay within the law,be mindful that sharks currently are a dwindling species so release as many as possible, fish with intense passion, target the monsters but be intelligent in our actions because we must always remember there are folks out there who want to see our sport run into the ground. We must learn to adapt to situations and outwit those that would harm us or our sport.
