First shark report on here! :D

Second time venturing to the Ft. Desoto pier last night with another member on here (Spinnermike) and it was COLD! At least cold for us. Lol. Was only in the low 60's or high 50's but the wind was really kicking. Started floating out various frozen baits, mullet, ladyfish, stingray, bluefish, etc.. after about 20 minutes of dropping that big blue fish to the bottom my 6/0 started singing. I let her run for a bit then tried to set the hook and it was gone... waited less than 5 minutes and she was back . Let her run a bit longer this time and knew I had her hooked good. Didn't take long to real in, walkin' her down to the beach took the longest.

Just a couple inches over 6ft.

Love to see Fort Desoto producing sharks for anglers braving the cold temps. There are some huge hammers and Tigers that swim that channel. Thanks for sharing with us.

I'd LOVE to hook into one of those! My biggest reel is only a 9/0 (for now) but I'd be happy to even hook something that big and watch in awe as I get worked over lol. Can't wait to catch my first tiger some day!

Nice fish! But fyi that's a sandbar, not a bull. Besides the shape of the head and the fins, the inter-dorsal ridge is the biggest giveaway. If you have access to a kayak, the beaches just north of you are absolutely teeming with nice sandbars right now.

Hmm.. Really? Those two are too similar for me lol. I'm still trying to distinguish the difference in those. I appreciate the correction though! Are you talking north like Pass a Grille and Madiera Beach?

A little piece of advise in from my expierience is that traditionally bulls dont put up much of a fight after the first run. Usually there is a lot of dead weight and big old head shakes. As for the sandbars they fight more like blacktips, they haul butt when they pick upthe bait and the put up more of a fight. Bulls usually dont take fast runs and sandbars do.

Whenever you land them bulls are usually in the 8 foot range but one under that isnt a huge rarity, they also are very stocky with very large girths. Sandbars are more of an inline fish that has a proportionate body.

Heres an example of a sandbar, their dorsal fins really give it away. They are very tall and generally shoot straight up on the backside.

Heres an example of a bull. As you can see they are very beefy and their dorsal fin isnt very tall and it has a dinstinct curve on the back side of it.

I hope this helped you better distinguish the two sharks.

Thank you! That helps haha. This one really didn't put up much of a fight but I did have the drag fairly tight. Did hit and run pretty good when it picked up the bait.. I appreciate the input from those of you that are much more experienced and know your sharks better than myself!

Would the shark in this picture be a bull or a sandbar? He was definitely thicker and I THINK had more of a bull nose but the dorsal fin seems straighter like the sandbar.

Dorsal shape on the above picture tells me its a Bull and the original shark of this post caught at Ft Desoto parkis a sandbar shark aka brown shark.
