Great White & Sword Deep Blue Report
Went out for my 1st time for a Sword.
With Capt. John Peel
Goodbye Florida Coast Line.
Around 1:15am We saw that one of or floats was missing in the line up.
30 min later it pops up 2 miles north of where we dropped it.
We get up on the float and it's moving fast we tie a rope on the line and start trying to bring in what we though was a monster Sword....
after 2 hours of loosing line and having to chase the beast down we get it up to the back of the boat and Capt John says It's a Greatwhite! I am holding the line with Capt John and I'm trying to get my Camera out of my pocket.
keep in mind the seas in the gulf last night were 7Ft + with the 10ft rolling in every 7 secs. I snapped three pictures everytime we got it close to the boat. John had to cut the line because I almost went over board a few times trying to get a picture. He was getting very upset with me for acting this way over a "big dumb shark." We got the Greatwhite to the boat 3 times. One time in the back, one time on the right side and the other was on the right side.
You can kinda see the tail in this shot.
I'm kinda upset I missed the shots but, It's not worth loosing my life.
Then the sun came up and we had a sword on.
I have to get some rest, I'll be on later the room feels like its moving up and down
For the Capt. It was his 3rd GreatWhite over 17 years fishing this spot.
He would have harvested it if it was a Mako, but it wasn't.
He knew from the fight that it was a shark. He said we wasted alot of time and energy for nothing. But for me it was a dream come true. When the shark came to the backside of the boat the peck fins looked huge the nose of the shark had a point but the girth was almost the size of the back of his boat. Capt John Peel said the shark was in the 800lb Range around 10ft. He told me about whites inspecting his boat out there before while he was charter fishing. He said one came up and hit the back side of his boat with its tail popping the back of his boat up and causing a wake in the front of the boat. All the people on the boat fell down.
This same shark hit 4 other baits that were out messing up his rigs very bad.
I wish would have got the pictures I was trying to get, but lighting was low and seas were high.
please tell us a little more, how did it fight, how many runs, any head shakes?
Thats how the capt. knew it wasn't a sword because he didn't feel any head shakes.
The shark took a 30lb float, and a 20lb float under for over 1mile before it came back up. He was hooked for 45min-1hr before we got to him. Then we got to the float and it was still moving south. The capt tied a long rope on the float and started to hand line him in. The shark felt the pressure from the capt and it peeled about 150 yards of rope in a matter 2-3 min. The capt said he thinks "It's a Big Dumb Shark." so he asked me after fighting the shark for 20-30min if I could help him out some. He told me not to get tied up in the line or rope because I could get killed by getting pulled in and under with no way to find me. I kept messing up all night and the capt was telling me "There are no mess up out here." If you mess up your dead. There was fear in me because I had no idea what I was doing out there,I'm as green as they can come when it comes to boat fishing.
So he told me don't wrap the line around my hands or I'm dead ect ect...
So I was infront of Capt. John gaining line and he was behind laying the line in sections incase of another huge run. We attached 4 floats to the line as we gained and lost so now the shark had 6 floats on him all togeather. He took all the line from us and we had to follow him. this was about 1 hr into the fight. He slowed down a bit we pull all the line up to the last float and we had another 100-200 yards to go. He charged the back of the boat so we gained all the line back.
He came up to the back and shot straight down under the back of the boat. About 20 min later we get him on the right side of the boat just to have him go under us again. We get all the floats off the line after this bacause we knew we had to let him go and had a ID of what type of shark it was. We pulled him up on last time and John cut the line after getting the last float off. Capt. John was upset because all the time and energy we waisted on that shark and loosing out on checking the other floats. We had 4 other rigs cut by sharks that night. 18 hour trip Capt. John Peel is one of the best sword fishermen out there. He has caught over 1500 swords in his life!
I would recommend going out on a charter with him for wahoo and swords.
You will get one with him.
He's 62 and was in way better shape than me out there the whole trip.
All i was doing was getting in his way
Here is his webpage check it out!

Almost every great white sighting in Florida has been in the colder months of the year, I was talking to Chris Fisher of OCEARCH and he told me that great whites definitely target swordfish migrations. If you guys both got a positive ID on the fish then it was probably the big ol' grey fellow. You guys would have never caught up to a mako and even if you did it would have probably jumped around and no other shark in our waters has a similar body structure to the white besides a mako. And for all the haters, Jimmy doesn't need to BS, he lands huge fish on his own and takes pictures of EVERYTHING, big or small. But of course with luck during a spectacular moment it's hard for everything to work out right... but keep trying while it's cold, there will be more.
Here's the one OCEARCH got in Jax, FL.

That's what I have heard also. But because of there shear size it's like a bulldozer, slow and steady for a hour or two strait. Just read Frank Munduses book, he would chase a shark on a barrel to the horizon, try to fish the engine, then chase him to the horizon again, fix, chase, fix.
One hell of a fish no doute.

well when you can whip a 9fter on a 6/0 and 50lb mono from a pier its no doubt they are no prized fighting fish. its just the namesake everyone is after.

But when that same shark grows to 2-3 tons, 6,000 pounds , 10 meters, 30 feet, no way your going to whip him.
I agree that they may not be the most fighting fish (I wouldn't know from experience) but at that size even a shitty battle would be epic.
