Veli was fishing on the Anglins Pier and he spotted a big hammerhead doing circles over the sandbar just under the middle house. This hammer had been seen multiple times in the area over the last week. He quickly grabbed a few mackerel and started throwing chunks into the water. He took one and butterflied it and casted it out on his Avet 50w. The hammer made a few circles on the bottom and then the bait disappeared. Like a vacuum cleaner he sucked it up off the bottom and started to swim south. Veli set up on this Hammerhead on Monday morning around 11:30. He fought the fish for 45 minutes to an hour. I got a call around 12 pm and rushed down to the pier to help him pull the hammer in and get a good quick release. We only had a measuring tape that was 12 feet long and he was about 8 inches longer than the tape by the looks of it. Below you will see pictures as well as a link to the video I uploaded and the story CBS4 ran on the catch. Veli did a great job reeling the shark in quickly so she would have a strong healthy release.

Thanks for watching!

WOW!!Is all I can say watching this 13 to 14 foot hammer attack a Nurse ,,,,time to spool two 16/0's with 300 lb test and tie both to one Super rig with a live cuda or ray then just hang on for the runaway train ride.In the current ,between the poles and with the power behind those giant T heads GOOD LUCK to those who think they will get a shot.IT CAN BE DONE -- it was done in 1969 when Robert Mostler fought for 3 hours and caught a 1007 hammer at 3 mile bridge (Florida keys)using a 12/0 packed to the brim with 130 lb test line ,, but then again in 69 there were no power poles and very few lobster traps to contend with.

"My cousin fresh off his fishing hiatus, catching that 8’9 bull earlier in March gave him the SHARK FEVER!!! That Sunday mourning around 11 I get a call from him to go fishing, still at work I told him I would go as soon as I get out … so right after work I head home grab the equipment and he picks me up and to the Keys we are headed. Get down there to our sting ray spot trying to snag them but they are no where to be found, and with the sun going down and we don’t have any equipment for the night we make a last minute effort for bait at the docks were we get a 15lb cuda. So we walk up the bridge and start to set up, with a couple of people around us. So as we are tying our rigs, we hear a splash and the lady next to us screams look at the size of that shark, like she had just saw a ghost, I look over and I see an eagle ray and thought to myself maybe it came close to the surface and the wing stuck out and looked like a shark. A few seconds later she comes over to tell us about the size of the shark and how our reels would not be able to catch it, nodding my head with a smile on my face thinking there is no way there is a shark down there that I wouldn’t be able to stop. We start to float our baits out and we realize that the tide was slacking, and I look to my cousin and tell him I bet on of us gets nailed while floating out; my bait got stuck in front of the piling and was taking forever to go out, so I reeled it up and start to float out again … looking down at my reel not paying much attention I hear my cousin yell IT’S A HAMMER!!! I look up and in-between our two baits you could see the fin closing in, the shark comes in and head straight for my cousins cuda head, I was just about to say he’s gonna pick you up when it made a sharp u-turn comes in and picks up my tail … the hammer banks to the right and I get tangled in my cousin bait, we are quick to untangle and I keep letting it go out even though it had already inhaled the bait on the initial pick up, as soon as it get outside the piling I locked up and nailed, it pulled off about 50 yards of line and then the hooks pulled … with all the excitement we drew a crowd around us, so I look to my cousin and go its your turn … so he starts to float out his head again, and I am not sure what the reason was but he turn his head back and then all of a sudden something was pulling line fast, so he looks over and he has a 7-8 ft nurse on the end of his 14/0, as soon as it was hooked it did dead rolls and wrapped up his wire, so we took the time and let the nurse untangle itself, and then realized we lost our last chance at the hammer … determined at another opportunity we came up with the idea of gaffing the cuda head and pulling it up … so struggling to hit the cuda with out doing any harm to the nurse time start to go back and my cousins like if I take any longer the hammer is going to eat the nurse, I look at him and smile and go yeah right … within about 20 seconds we see the fin again and its coming right at us , and starts to do circles around the nurse …. I had my phone in my pocket and my cousin is yelling at me to record it so I pull out my phone, and that’s when the action picked up … I guess the hammer liked the spotlight because as soon as I started to record he came in and pick up the nurse by the tail, and start to dragging it out … we were excited … it came back to pick up the nurse several times … with all the excitement we didn’t realize the sun was setting and we didn’t have any lights on us, so we decided to call it a night , as we are fixing things to walk back to the car we notice a charter boat under us tarpon fishing, the captain told us there are several of them around and that he ran over a larger black hammer a few days before , so as we walk down the bridge I thought to myself wow that lady was right our reels didn’t stand a chance against that shark off a bridge ".

This masive spinner shark was pregnent and was caught by John Catrell. It measured 8'2", I think it broke every record that exists for spinner sharks. Tater was gone to get his delinquent pit bull on the loose when his 16/0 went off. John was the man, the fish took some drag off the ole school 16/0, and put a good fight for a spinner.

We had a double header here, mine was 8' even, another masive spinner along with his little buddy. Take a good look at this pictuer, it has Tater Smith, John Caterll, Joey Polk and me. That is a force to be reckoned with, our new team for 2011. Me and Joey ai'nt by ourselves no more, these 2 guys are some of the best pier fishermen ever and they really have there heart in it. The 2011BHC has a nightmare team now that we have John and Tater on board.

Here is the freezer full of bonita aftre the few good days me and Joey had this week, one day we caught 30 another day we caught 15.

Ok I got one, well I've got many but this one I don't think will happen again. It was first of may and the kings were chewing the pier down and I was on the end with Mike Moore looking for cobias. I finally talked him into going king fishing so he is fishing off the front and I see a 25 lber coming right at me. I didn't say anything, just picked up my rod when the fish came into casting range and threw. The fish ate and I was on! Mike looked over and I said I need a gaff and he was cussing me, I was laughing my ass off. He gets the gaff and is lowering it into the water, when I hear, O my god what is that! I look up and see this huge blue submarine coming right for my cobe. It was a 10 ft mako shark! My fish runs for the piling but the mako runs over and grabbs it and shakes its head and rips the fish in half! I'm reeling the front half and the mako swings around and grabs the rest of it. He swimms south and I'm jacking it the whole time to get it to jump but I don't think it even knew it was hooked. I could see the jig sticking out of its mouth along with the cobes head. I got pics for non belivers.

In years gone by we have on occasion been lucky to find local boaters to lend us a hand in capturing some of the big specimens but nothing can compare to having a boat ready to go on a moments notice.
Here are some examples of boat assisted captures:

In 1990 Eddie Grosso's 12 foot hammer and 200 lb bull.Made possible by a good gaff man and a willing commercial lobster fisherman.

The 12 foot hammer.

Bahia Honda 1981-70 feet up on the hump and fighting a large Jewfish for over an hour.

The Jewfish was gaffed and a boat from the state park marina was found to secure the fish.

The large grouper was finally hauled into the vessel.

The small boat was very helpful in the capture.Unfortunetly one of the boaters suffered a gash from one of the bridge gaffs as the jewfish was being pulled over the gunwale.

My buddy Mark Jacobsen and i with the jewfish on the dock.My old Penn 12/0 and Harrington rod in hand.

It might be a dangerous way to target the big sharks from the bridges but it might mean finnally catching those 1000 lb plus hammerheads that have been destroying our gear and taking all our line.I think it's worth the risk and i live for the adventure.

I have 3 16/0 and 1 14/0 the 14 is the 2nd sandbar allways. The14 allways comes up short when ya puting the baits out off the beach. I use 130lb dacron by r/w interprises. The stuff dont stretch at all. it is olive green so the blue fish dont cut it off. It sinks so no boats get it. My 16 holds 1100 yds. Its priced fairly, 30$ a spool. The only bad thing is it will burn a rut in your arms and fingers. I change line every 2 years so its got a good life. It holds a good frey factor and is strong. The bigger reels give ya something to hold on to, and is eaiser to hold still while ya crank. As far as the weak bridge, just be aware of how it tears up and avoid the situation. Anything can be torn up. The smaller reels are great on boats when ya can follow the fish. Stand up on a boat is diffrent than a pier or beach. To put that pressure on a boat takes a chair. Gold reels are for boats they are not built for the sand. The design of the senator is simple and works jamed full of sand. I hooked a 11'2" hammer in the belly between the peck fins, she ran 800yds on the first run. at one point I was looking at the loops 100yds from the bottom of the spool. 2:45 min, and I was glad I threw the bait off the pier. If I would have taken It out she would have striped me off. I fish for the biggest fish I can catch, why waist my time and let the best fish of my life take all of my line.
