My first shark experience was w Maxwell's world record Tiger
Hello all, my name is Tony and i am from Charleston SC. My first site of a large fish was in the summer of 1964 at Cherry Grove SC. I was only 15 at the time but what i saw in those two days started a love of this sport that has been going on now for 45 years. What alot of people dont know is that in two days on that weekend they put 14 fish on the pier and lost another 9. All were Tigers except for one lone Bull Shark. The smaller fish were in the 400lbs plus range and there were two over 600. They also lost one larger then the record fish Walter caught.
After that event they were told to leave most piers on the grandstrand and they wound up in Charleston SC. Fate played a large part in what was to happen next. My family spent the summer of 65 at the Isle Of Palms and the very first day i went to the pier there they were. I was then 16 and hung around those guys for the next three summers until iwas old enough to fish myself. Most of the sharks at that location were Lemons, Bulls and Tigers but none were ever close to the size of Walters. They hooked and brought to the pier a very large hammerhead but could never get his to the beach. Once they were put off that pier they fished Edisto beach, Folly Beach and then started beach fishing in the Charleston harbor at a location called Fort Moultrie.
Walter Maxwell caught the fish but the man who guided him, taught him and custom made his rod and harness was Jim Michie. Jim passed away in 2004 and just last week i was contacted by the admin of his estate to come and try to put dates and locations on the pictures. Some i could but some were taken way before i knew them.William Fundora spoke to her as well and thats how i got his name and the name of your fine club.
There are alot of good beaches here to fish, maybe someday we can all fish together
Tony

HI, and thank you for the post. Yes, i was only a kid at the time but it left an impression with me that has lasted for a very long time. The Carolina Coast is a great place for large tigers and bulls. Our hammerhead population is good as well. I have been doing this for a very long time but still enjoy it very much. The bait of choice her are rays and there are several reasons for that. One, we have a large population of blue crabs and it difficult for them to chew up a 5 to 7 ib ray and the second is that we have a very large population of them. I guess other baits would work well but thats what walters Tiger was caught on and i have been doing it ever since.
I will gather some good old pics for you very soon..Maybe one day soon we can all fish together
I would like to know if you have any members in my area
Tony
i wouldnt know if there are members in your area but willy would, and hopefully we can fish together sometime soon maybe you can make it down for our long key tournament which is i belive in march or april. ray is a great bait over here along with cuda and bonita but we dont have as much of a crab problem here.

Welcome aboard Tony!! WOW I'm honored to have this caliber of shark hunter here with us.
Folks with Tony on board we now have someone who was there to witness one of fishing's greatest moments and an accomplishment that has not been equaled in Land-based shark fishing history.Tony was so impacted by watching that marvelous feat that he has been hooked on shark fishing ever since that day.Not unlike Kiki Ferrer who got hooked on shark fishing after seeing Rene de Dios and I getting spooled by a giant hammerhead on long Key bridge almost 15 years ago. After that Kiki caught a bad case of what I call "Shark Fever"To make a long story short Kiki now lives in Islamorada and is the first mate on the Reel Mc Coy charter boat out of Bud and Mary's marina.
Tony has many insights about Walter Maxwell and the fascinating group of hard core shark fisherman who frequented those South and North Carolina piers in the 1960's and early 70's.Stories about there catches and there personalities that will bring to life those characters catching those huge sharks during that very special era in our sport. It was an era when land-based shark fishing history was being made not only in the Carolina's,but also in Texas and Florida as well.
Tony will be sharing with us some of the untold stories and the pictures that will leave you breathless. We look forward to seeing that piece of shark fishing History. Thanks Tony .A shark fishing trip with Tony to fish those places where Maxwell and friends made so much history is allready in the planning stage so stay tuned and maybe we will make some shark fishing history again soon.
