Are land-based shark fishermen getting close to catching the elusive 15 foot hammerhead shark. From the way things have been going in 2014 with several huge hammers over 13 and 14 foot caught around Florida's beaches it seems a real possibility that someone may catch a 15 foot hammerhead in the near future. Now more then ever in the past ,equipment used to fish for these most powerful sharks has improved making it very likely that some hardcore land-based shark fishermen will make this a reality. Here are some pictures of recently caught MONSTER HAMMERHEAD SHARKS.

It was the second night of the 6th annual Blacktip Challenge land-based shark fishing tournament. We arrived at the beach and we had to wait about 1.5 hours before we could start fishing because the seaweed was too thick to paddle out baits and the tide was low. When the seaweed subsided, Peter Buban kayaked out his bait using a large stingray 300yds. After Peter Buban and Peter Barrett kayaked out the remaining three rods, Peter Wahl from Germany walked down the beach to catch sharks to prevent from tangling with the other lines. An hour later Peter Wahl saw a giant dorsal fin cruising on the surface of the water. He began to scream at his other teammates that a huge shark was in the area. Shortly after, Peter Buban’s line began screaming! Peter was using a Shimano Tiagra 130 spooled with 200lb braid and 200lb mono topshot. He put the lever drag at full and was gripping the spool with both hands as the line continued to peel off the reel. The shark took between 800-900yds of line in the first run. Peter Buban was holding onto the rod with everything he had trying to stop the shark. During the fight several boats cruising the beach almost cut the line. Peter Barrett had to hold the line down to prevent anything from happening. Forty-five minutes later the shark was landed. The circle hook was removed from the mouth and the shark was quickly measured and documented before being released back into the water. It was a monster great hammerhead that measured 13ft 9inches. The shark was out of the water less than a minute and half. Peter Buban and Peter Barrett followed the shark in their kayaks out 200yds to make sure that it was okay.

Giant Shark Lost!! Video
Postby Blacktip Hunter » Tue Apr 15, 2014 12:22 pm

A friend of mine dropped off a fresh cobia carcass earlier that the day. The wind was blowing from the west and I had high hopes. We hit the beach and deployed 3 baits. Within 15 minutes my rod with the cobia started bouncing. I picked the rod up and waited. Then line started burning off the reel. I set the hook and the line went completely slack. I reeled up the slack and caught up to the shark. Then the shark just took off straight east, ripping line off the reel. He took a nice run in the beginning, went below half spool. I gained a lot of line on the shark and then he just woke up. He burned another 400+yds of line. I had a very high drag with a Duel 12/0w. At that moment I realized that this shark would die if I continued to fight it. I wanted to keep going, but it’s more important to me for the fish to live than to have my trophy. I switched with Peter 30 minutes into the fight.

Peter harnessed up and took the rod. He bumped the drag lever up to one notch below full drag. Peter laid back in the harness and had a standoff with the shark. He started gaining line and within 20 minutes we were back into the mono. Shortly after the line went lack. We quickly reeled in the remaining line and discovered that the 20/0 Mustad had been bent out significantly. Peter said, “this was the strongest fish he had ever felt”, much stronger than his 13’9” hammerhead that he caught in the 2014 Blacktip Challenge. It could have been a giant hammer or a huge tiger. We have no idea. It wasn’t a foul hooked fish, the hook had significant bite marks in it.

We didn't measure him, but the fish was way over 13ft, much closer to 14ft. The head was over 40 inches wide and the mouth could fit a 5-6ft blacktip in it!

The shark took close to or more than 1000yds of line on the Tiagra 130 with the drag lever above strike (60-70lbs of drag). When we got the shark close to the jetty, we were just trying to release her. People were just taking photos of us trying to remove the hook and release the shark. We never tried to get a photo with the shark. It was more important for us to see this shark live than to get a good photo. I apologize for the poor photos and video.

The other night sitting in my living room watching my favorite line up of fishing television shows my phone goes off. Sure enough it was one of my friends sending me a fishing picture. I opened it up to see the picture of a hammerhead with something in its mouth. After questioning him he told me that he was out tarpon fishing at knapps point. He lucked out and caught a tarpon. While fighting it this hammerhead came along and stole his tarpon from him. Luckily he was able to grab his phone and snap a picture. Im sure that shows us what hammerheads favorite food is. He told me this hammerhead was a good 8 foot long. I of course found this interesting, especially because I would love to catch a hammer. Do you guys have any advice on catching them. Any tips like daytime or night time. Bait. Time of year where they frequent. Now some of you guys might be saying where the hell is knapps point. Its one of our fishing grounds on the west coast. The south west corner of Sanibel island. Around this time of year tarpon are always found here. Any advice would be appreciated guys. I would love to catch a hammer.

I wasn't thinking of it at the time but this hammerhead was the SUPERBOWL SUNDAY SHARK. I even got yelled at by some friends for not watching the game but it was the least of the thoughts on my mind.

I heard from some inside sources that some bull sharks have been around locally... I called up Dan aka Blacktip aka the British guy, we knew it was SUPERBOWL Sunday and figured less people would be around to mess with us. So I looked at the tide charts and planned it out so we headed out with some baits to fish one spot where we met up with Tony aka seawolf and Joe aka sandtiger... joe's 16/0 got picked up by a small bull shark, he set the hook and fought it for a while but the line popped for some reason. That spot had some wake-boarders and jetskiiers so we got tired of it. We left to hit up a marina to check for some baits where we got a kingfish head and a almaco jack carcass. Then we bought some snacks and headed off to spot 2. We deployed baits a short drop with massive rocks but the current was still too strong and our baits swept to the side and into the flats where there was less current. We sat around for about an hour or 2 figuring there were no fish around... the seaweed had my bait floating on the surface and all of the sudden Dan yells look and I turn around and something had bashed the surface a ways out near our baits... simultaneously my rod screams, i pick it up and put it in freespool, give it 20 seconds and did the running man (I only had a kingfish head) , the fish was there and I had my drag set at about 55-65lbs and it started burning me steady but fast as hell, i sat down and tightened up a little more but there was no stopping it.

She burned 400 yards then slowed down a little, I figured it was a big bull shark considering the area so I put my hands on the spool to put additional drag and stopped him, it turned and swam in fast and I gained a lot of line but it dumped me back out to the same spot. I needed Dan's assistance strapping in to a waist harness for support. I couldn't gain line power winching so I got up, held the spool, and walked way up the beach and ran back gaining line and did this 2 or 3 times. The shark was getting too close to a curve on the beach so we went back towards it and got the line in a better position and from there it was 100 yards away, I still thought it was a bull shark but then it surfaced and all I saw was a yellowish color so I thought it was a lemon... it surfaced once more and I thought it was a bull. It wasn't until it was 50 yards in the giant sickle fin verified what it was. When it got close I dropped my rod and rushed towards the swivel figuring it was my first hammer I didn't want to lose it.OMG what a fish! We had it beached within an hour of hooking it. The fish weighed too much her girth was huge. Just the 2 of us wasn't enough to get it out of the water. We snapped some pictures with our dying camera, measured it at 170 inches and spent the next hour walking back and forth with HER reviving her did about 10 laps along the beach, we ran into 3 or 4 rays in the process and it came close to biting me when it swung around a few times. But it swam off slow and steady and I was satisfied with the release.

She taped out at 14ft 2inches and an estimated girth of 65-75inches which gives it an estimated weight of 800-1000lbs.

Thanks a lot for the help Dan and for the support from everyone on here, I'm glad I got that one and even more satisfied that she swam off. I have been really chasing sharks after 2008 when I got my first shark (a 7.5ft spinner) and for some reason I had a 2 year dry run with no sharks landed, then in 2011 I got a 10ft tiger early in the year and an 8.5ft bull and some other very very nice land based catches, this year I wasn't able to make any successful trips until February 5th when I got this shark. I try to show my support for land based shark fishing in all nooks and crannies of the world and I am a catch and release shark fisherman because I hope that one day I'll be able to go out and catch my sharks again.
