These two anglers both South Florida Shark Club members deserve RECOGNITION for being the first to catch Tiger Sharks from a bridge in many years.Luis Cordova and Jonathan Polsino are the two outstanding anglers who accomplished this,here are there stories: KEYS BRIDGE TIGER SHARK 3/22/14 by LUIS CORDOVA " Being an avid bridge fisherman, this is one catch that I will never forget. I am sure some of the old timers will chime in and let us know just how rare it is to catch a Big Tiger Shark from a Keys Bridge. To my recollection, there have only been a few Tigers caught off a Keys Bridge in the last 40-50 years. Will Fundora caught a Big Tiger on rope at the old Bahia Honda Bridge in the early 80's. My uncle Jose and Lui Iglesias also caught a Nice Tiger off the old Bahia Honda Bridge on a rope in the early 80's. There is also a Big Tiger caught on rod and reel off of Long Key by Lui Iglesias in I think the early 90's. And then there is the massive 14ft Tiger Shark caught by Lee Caman off of CH 2 bridge in 1969. Other than these few Tigers caught I have not heard of many others. That was until the wee hours of Saturday Morning 3-22-14. The Trip I spoke to my friend Brad who I had not fished with in about a year. We both wanted to go the Keys so we headed out late Friday afternoon after work. We had planned to do a Long Key outgoing tide and a CH5 incoming tide trip. Since the outgoing tide was going to change in a few hours we decided to hit CH5 and get set up. This is a bridge that I have been fishing since I was a kid. I use to go with my Father, my Grandfather and Uncle. There are better bridges in the Keys to fish no doubt, but I have always enjoyed fishing CH5. I had not Shark Fished on CH5 in a while as I had stared going much further south recently and also trying new spots. The tide was still going out pretty good so we rigged up and put baits out. I had a Shark pick up an AJ head on the outgoing tide, and once I set up on this shark I knew it was a good one. I can feel his weight right off the bat and the Shark starts taking drag with no problem off of my 12/0. After about one minute the Shark comes loose. I am upset and don't know what happened. When I reel in the Shark had broken my number 19 wire. I was pretty amazed because this Shark was not of the Kamakaze Blacktip style. This was a big heavy Shark that was not playing around. I believe I had lost a Big Bull Shark. The Tiger Shark Once the tide switched to incoming, we set up our baits knowing there are still lobster traps in the area. But we knew where they were so we could try and keep a Shark off of them. Brad and I were frustrated because we lost several Sharks on the outgoing. The bite was on. Now on the incoming the bite had slowed. Brad did get another hit around 2AM but he lost it as well. It was time for my sleeping bag. I had my 12/0 out with half of a Cuda, and my 14/0 out with a Piece of Amberjack. I laid down next to my 14/0 and tried to get some rest. Around 4:45AM the tide was slack and I even noticed the tide was slowly starting to move out but minimal. It was time to bring the rods in until right then and there my 14/0 gets picked up. I feed the Shark some line and then set up. I'm on!!! This is a weird fight. This Shark can pull drag out when it wants too but it's cutting a lot and making dashes for the bridge. Knowing the tide was about to change my worry was the Shark going under. After a frustrating night of losing Sharks I was NOT GOING TO LET THAT HAPPEN. I ran after the Shark every time it made a dash to the bridge. I tightened my drag as much as I could and did my best to stay right on top of it and I was ready to sit on the rod with all my might if it tried to go under. After a while we had the Shark coming up but it was still fighting and not ready to be had straight up and down. I am already hearing that it's a Big Bull. I too get a glimpse and it looks like a Big Bull. Finally we have her straight up and down. By this time a bunch of guys from another camp are with us. They were all saying the usual things we all hear out there and they were surprised to see such a Nice Shark. After a couple of minutes Brad says " bro it's a Tiger " " it's an fu$$in Tiger ". I say no way????? And yep you can now see it's beautiful stripes. It's a pretty Big Tiger. She looks about 9ft Long and she had very nice Girth to her. We are pumped up so start walking her down the bridge so we can give her a good release with not much rig left in her. The guys from the other camp helped us walk her. The tide was switching so the Tiger would occasionally try and go under. We got her to the Seawall took some pics and we let this beautiful Keys Tiger back on her way. Seeing that Tiger Shark go back into the Florida Keys waters special. Measurements of the Shark We could not get the correct measurements of this Shark. She was all of 9ft long but we don't have the exact measurements. We couldn't straighten her out and some people were suggesting we bring her over the wall. I put a stop to that for the good of the Shark. bringing her over the wall would have hurt her even further and I was going to do that just fir a measurement. We caught and released her and that is good enough for me. The pics speak for themselves. She was big hefty Tiger!" Hope you enjoy the report and pics. It ran due east out of the inlet and headed north, except there was one problem, she couldn't make any headway due to the current that was incoming at the Inlet Super strong due to the 30 plus winds . We know for sure this shark wouldn't have been caught without the current working with us. But nonetheless Peter fought the shark, the wind was howling and the waves were crashing. Peter ended up at the end of the jetty using a rock to hold onto so he would go flying in. And for those of you who don't know him he is no small guy, 230lbs and 5'10'' and he works out every day in preperation for a fight with a huge shark. He fought this shark on stand up tackle with a harness and gimble belt for nearly two hours with over 70lbs of drag on this fish the whole time, he is very strong. After two grueling hours of fighting this shark and nearly getting cut off by 6 boats we finally caught a glimpse of her, she was a huge hammer and she showed her dorsal. It stood at least three feet out of the water . We attempted to walk her down the jetty so we didn't have to land her on the rocks, but with the current, wind and waves all fighting against us we had no choice but to land her and release her right there. She was enormous, her head was easilyy over 40 inches wide. Her mouth was wide enough to eat a 5-6 foot blacktip with no problem. After a two hour battle we had to say good bye, she was tagged by me and swam off strong do to the circumstances and issues with cutting the leader our priority was to release her unharmed rather than measure her. All photos and videos of this catch were taken by Josh(Blacktip Hunter) After this extreme battle it shows you how having a great group of guys together who are very well prepared, all love the sport and ready for battle, things go somewhat smoothly under severe circumstances,and luck always favors the well prepared and passionate. Unfortunately though you don't always have the liberty of having another guy with you so you go at it solo. Today I decided to hit up Sebastian inlet in hopes of a big bull or tarpon. When I got there I started out on the south side jetty around 2 P.M. There were birds everywhere but I had no luck and reverted to the north jetty. After arriving I packed my crap and prepared for the haul to the end of the Jetty and for those of you who have fished there you know getting to the end is a trip and a half. When I got out there the tide was still rushing in so there were no hopes of getting a shark bait out yet so that had to hold off. But the area was very promising, spinners and blacktips were jumping like mad anywhere from 100 yards to 1000 yards and beyond. So the sharks were there no doubt, and so were the tarpon. They were well within casting distance of the jetty so I got out the spoon and started casting, but after an hour of that I had no luck but i didnt give up.I sat and waited for the tide to change. All the while the blacktips and spinners were having there playday with the mullet, the mullet were plentiful if you had a cast net. Finally 5 P.M. rolled around and the tide started ripping out. I grabbed my Makaira 80w and put a whole bonita on there and floated that sucker out. A half hour rolled by with nothing so I put a bucktail on my casting rod and threw it out. And boom the first cast was a success I knew it wasn't big but it was fighting when I got it in I realized it was a red and that it may be slot size. No such luck, ended up being 28 inches. I released the red and wen back at it, frequently checked to see if my big bait was getting messed with, but nothing had happened yet. After another fifteen minutes or so I hooked up on the bucktail and after five minutes of running it leaped and spit the hook, dang tarpon why do you have to be so hard to hook????? So I casted again and this time I hooked in and hooked in good. The battle though was a short one, surprisingly due to the shear size of this one. It was a fat Red that taped out to be 41 inches. After a few quick pictures back in to the water she went. The second the Red swam off my 80w got picked up on a slow roll, I was sure what it was at first but it picked up a little speed and I pushed it up to strike after a 5 second run it went slack. I knew it would come and pick it up again so I loosened the drag back up and set it down and before I could walk away it was singing again, only this time it was committed. After I felt comfortable I threw it up to strike and it went trucking I had to loosen the drag up I couldn't hold it because I had no harness on yet and I wasn't expecting anything that large. I walked over to the rail and got situated by then I was down into the braid and by then I knew this was no Blacktip or Spinner. I hunkered down and gave it to the shark ,I pushed the drag up well above strike and it acted as almost nothing had happened. I was freaking out then I had no harness on and was holding the rod with the reel around 60 - 70lbs of drag so I yelled at one of the guys on the jetty to get me my harness out of my backpack. He ran over and helped me get all strapped in and I got situated. By now I was down to a half a spool and only had around 500 yards of braid left so I bumped the drag up even more by now I had around 80lbs of drag on him and it slowed but only a little. I felt comfortable so I got my phone out and called Will and let him know that I was hooked up(he was supposed to come fish with me but couldnt) and it hadn't stopped yet. He was like "what????? Thats crazy he's rippin you on your Makaira?" I was like yeah I down to a third of a spool. I got off the phone with him and called Josh and let him know the deal, he said, " dude you've got a big hammer. And yelled to Peter and told him I was hooked up and was taking line on the Makaira." I got off the phone with him as I was getting towards the bottom of my spool and I really gave it to him I was around 90lbs of drag up on the rail and I finally stopped him. I almost got spooled!!!!!!!! I could see the bulge from the knot on the spool. I switched gears and popped it in low and started gaining line slowly and steadily. I got back up to around a quarter spool and my arm was on fire!!!!!!!! I loosened the drag up a little, somewhere around 65lbs and let it pull a little while I rested my arm. I continued reeling and the fish took a crazy left turn and headed north I put it in high gear and reeled like there was no tomorrow. When this fish headed north I thought for sure it was a massive hammer. It ran in the beach and I went with it I was reeling like a mad man at this point. I had gotten back up to over a half spool and had gotten some mono back on. I called and gave Will and Josh an update on the situation. Will was thinking I had a big hammer on, maybe 12'1'' or 12'2''. Then suddenly after getting almost all the way down to the end of the jetty and on to the beach it was off to the races again. Back out to the deep blue she went and this time I didn't wait I gave it to her I loaded down on the drag, somewhere around 75 or 80lbs. I certainly was glad for the rail without which I wouldn't be able to hold it. A boat came down and started drifting towards my line, I yelled and screamed like there was no tomorrow telling them I had a huge shark on. I was very thankful they understood and headed south rather than north. By now I had had the shark on for over an hour and it showed no signs of giving up soon. By then the shark had given up on the easterly route and head back north again but this time more towards the beach. I hauled butt running down the jetty reeling and this time I made it to the beach I got there and got in my battle position where I was me and my rod versus the beast King Kong!!!!!! After a half hour more I finally caught a glimpse of the shark. One of the guys fishing for Red Drum came to help me and had a huge spot light. I saw the notorious but faint stripes of the tiger. And she was a beast I knew from my experience with the hammer on Sunday that this shark was well over 13 feet!!!!!! I had given a pep talk like there was no tomorrow to one of the guys on the pier and talked him in to tail roping the shark for me. So he went to the waters edge and grabbed the leader. He got the beast within ten feet of the shore he walked out and the the bottom dropped about 3 feet. He was is chest deep water with waves crashing around him and a 13+ foot 850+lb tiger shark less than ten feet away from him. He swam like there was no tomorrow. I don't blame him. He got all caught up in the leader and was pulling and yanking on it and the shark came in, as soon as he got out a wave came in and lifted the shark in and she got her tail all wrapped into the leader the moment this happened I knew it wouldn't be good. She straitened her body out and snapped my 500lb mono lindgren pitman leader like it was nothing. I unstrapped and dropped my rod and ran out grabbed the rope and tried to get a tail rope of it before she could swim off. Unfortunately I wasn't fast enough and she swam off. My heart sank, I was so upset. After a two hour battle and her being that close I was really upset. But I know that stuff like that happens and Ill be back soon I search of another monster. This here shows the true importance of what it takes to have a good team that you fish with and that sticks together. If I had just one more person there who knew what they were doing I would have landed that shark. But now I look at the broader spectrum and realize, I'm only 17, most people don't see these experiences ever and when the do never twice in the same week. I will be back down in a month and will be going in search of the illusive King Kong and his bride Queen Kaka. There's a new pier in town, the culmination of ten years of local initiative. Once again, the Juno pier is putting anglers within casting distance of everything from snook to kingfish. The old pier was destroyed in the fierce Thanksgiving Day Storm of 1984. Four years later, a petition circulated by tackle shop owner John Lott was signed by 6,000 citizens eager to replace the old structure. Palm Beach County Commissioner Karen Marcus took up the cause and spearheaded efforts to build a new fishing pier. The county's Department of Environmental Resources Management, under Director Jim Barry, helped design the pier to accomodate the needs of coastal ecology. Particular emphasis was placed on protecting sea turtles that nest in the area. Nearby condominium owners and some local politicians had opposed rebuilding the pier, despite overwhelming demand for the pier by area fishermen. Pier advocates, on their second red-eye trip to Tallahassee, received final approval to build from the late Governor Chiles and his cabinet on June 13, 1996. Construction started that fall. The pier opened to fishing on January 13, 1999. In the first week, over 2,000 people came to fish or just take in the sights. By all estimates, the pier should be a welcome bonus to the region, attracting lots of fish--not to mention lots of visiting anglers. Old hands don't need instruction on how to fish from the new structure. Many still recount great days on the old pier. But newcomers have lots of questions. What kind of tackle do I bring? What kinds of fish are out there? When is the best time to fish? Before going into the techniques and species available, let's first consider the structure itself and the surrounding water. Juno pier is 990 feet long, 22 feet wide, and sits 20 feet above the water. At its seaward end is a 72-foot T. The water depthis roughly 12 feet, and there are limestone rock formations on both sides of the pier near its center. The rocks and pier's pilings attract schools of baitfish, which in turn draw predatory fish. Fishermen often head for the T at the very end of the structure, thinking this is the place to do business. For cobia, kingfsih and permit this may be so, but the section between the two shade structures is considered by many experts to be best because of the limestone rock structures on either side of the pier. These are natural baitfish attractors. "There were big schools of greenies and sardines hovering over the limestone, and pilchards on the bottom last summer," veteran pier fisherman Pete Schulz said, "and the schools of blue runners kept moving bait all around the pier." "About the middle of April the big schools of pilchards arrive. Early in the morning they go into the wash along the shore where 25- to 30-inch snook feast on them. In the afternoon, look for big jacks to come in from the ocean to attack the pilchards and greenies." Bluefish also feed in the milky water close to the sand, and it is possible to cast from the shoreward end of the pier to these fish. Catching your own live bait on the pier is not difficult. Cast nets are prohibited, but sabiki or ribbon rigs, which you attach to the end of your fishing line and drop into the water, will enable you to catch plenty of baitfish. For permit and cobia fishing, the best bait is a live calico crab. These can be caught by hand along the beach, or in a crab trap off the pier. Bait the trap with fish scraps or turkey entrails. Cobia also bite well on cut bait and squid. Kingfish, jacks, and bonita prefer live baits such as small bluerunners, sardines, pilchards, goggle-eyes or greenies (local for thread fin herring). Bluefish will go for cut mullet and, like Spanish mackerel, will readily hit jigs or spoons. April, May and June Giant bluefish (10 pounds and up) traditionally appear in mid- to late-April. They are ravenous and will hit live baits and almost any artificial lure thrown to them. Big African pompano come in from nearby reefs in April, too, and usually travel along the surf in pairs. A live menhaden or greenie is a standard bait for Africans. In the afternoon, when the wind picks up to 15 or 20 knots out of the southeast, big jack crevalle love to ride the waves right over the sandbar and chase baitfish around the pier. One-ounce heavy-duty plugs are the ticket for large jacks. Snook up to 30 pounds feed in the wash right next to the beach in the early morning and again at dusk. A 1- or 1-half ounce white feather or redtail hawk jig is the lure of choice. By June, and lasting well into July, look for schools of fiesty bonitas (little tunny) to come to the baitfish buffet at the pier. A freelined live bait or a spoon cast their way will do business. Pods of tarpon migrate north within casting of the pier. Look for big kingfish, also. If the wind is coming out of the west, a balloon tied just above the leader will take your live bait out to harm's way. Under other wind conditions, freeline a live bait. Large barracudas can be taken on live baits. Small bluerunners are especially good. July, August and September Kingfish will be present throughout this season, along with snook and plenty of croakers. Don't forget that snook must be released in the months of June, July and August, and there is a new slot limit of 26 to 34 inches. August is a good month for mangrove snapper. After a big storm, mutton snapper may leave their usual haunts offshore reefs and come in close to shore to feed. Both snapper species rarely refuse a small pilchard or menhaden. Permit can be caught throughout the summer. Night fishing is best for the permit. October, November and December The annual mullet run, which should continue to increase thanks to the net ban, influences the migrations of our winter gamefish. Bluefish can appear as early as mid-September, providing the mullet are here. Snook although permanent residents, also go on the feed when mullet show up. Southward migrating tarpon, big jacks, spinner sharks, and kingfish all feast on mullet. With luck, schools of large, ocean-dwelling redfish--20-pounders or larger--will come into the milky water just off the beach. A live finger mullet, or a piece of cut mullet fished on the bottom, will attract the reds; they can also be taken on spoons and large plugs. Look for pompano when the first big nor'easter stirs up milky water along the beaches. Barracuda and bluerunners will also be residents. January, February and March Some bluefish will be hanging around, but Spanish mackerel and bluerunners are most prevalent. The macks go for the chartreuse feather jigs, Hopkins and Crocodile spoons, and diamond shaped jigs. But probably the most recent outstanding lure has been the "Gotcha". The macs love em! The blue runners will hit all of the above plus cutbaits and shrimp. A few permit and cobia will be caught as well. By late February or early March large schools of croaker averaging a pound will be in the surf and in the water alongside the first shade shelter. Cut shrimp or small sand fleas available in the surf at the time will do the job. When You Go.... During turtle nesting season, March 1 through October 31, the pier opens one hour before sunrise and closes at sunset. Free parking is available at the Juno Beach Park. There are restrooms in the park. Admission fee is $3 for anglers age 13 and over; $1 for anglers 6 through 12, and all spectators; and free for children under 6. No fishing license is required.
