I have a Harnell similar to that. Same colors, foregrip, reel seat, & butt. Mine is only rated for 20lbs. I just have it hanging on the wall. mine is more of a collectors item in my opinion. But Kyler (GreenHorn) has a Harnell just like that that he shark fishes with and has caught some fish with it. May wanna ask him what he thinks of it.

I had read before about the Harnells w/ low line ratings, what size Varmac seat does yours have? The one I put up has a #6 seat that takes the feet of a 14/0 deep. It is hard to imagine putting a reel of that size on a rod rated for 20 or 30# line? Mine has not been cut or re-wrapped according to my rod guy. I looked at the chart Will put up but it refers to 1 piece rods only so mine is not on there. I will see if my guy can tell me the specific model. Thanks for the info. guys, I am really enjoying SFSC and appreciate the welcoming atmosphere.

Chris

Mine is more of a trolling rod. Its all orginal. Ill post pictures tomorrow so you can see the comparison.

I love my rod guy, he finished my Harnell resto. and it showed up today, just in time. I don't think I'll be able to resist strapping the 14/0 on it for the BHC! I think he did a really nice job, just hope he did not buff out any mojo this old stick came with...

Is a Harnell 575 similar to a Harrington 555?I don't know.Harnell was 10 foot beast and Harrington smaller in every way was almost 9 foot . Back in the 1970's the older guys in the shark club(JD,Ron,Ricky, and Rene) used to travel to Florida's west coast Naples to buy 10 foot Harnell shark rods from a gentleman his name was Mr Purdue and he built those Harnells with cork butt and foregrip they had like a 28 tip Mildrum roller tip ,snakes guides (foulproofs) and nice diamond wraps .Those Harnells were Classics were thick at the bottom and had a slow taper ,,,,,in other words thick from bottom to tip. Those rods were awesome and caught more fish then any other.Don't even own one myself right now but I'm looking for one .My buddy Rene (rip) had two and his family sold off his gear after his death without letting any of his buddies in the shark club know. Some of the older guys that are still around but don't shark fish still have them but won't part with them(Vince,Pedrito,Miguel,Joaquin,Rich, etc, etc because of there history in the 70's and 80's South beach,Rene and a era that can never be duplicated again.

Here's Rene de Dios with his Harnell /14/0 combo and a 1977 Hammer from the South Beach pier(Miami Beach)

Harrington Spec Sheet

Harnell and Harrington are synonomous with some of the best land-based shark rods ever made .Here is a chart of the many different sizes and styles of Harrington blanks. The chart includes butt size ,tip size and suggested lb test for each blank. Thanks to Steve (Stevebait)from Texas for providing the charts.Steve is an asset to this shark fishing website with his many years of expierience in the sport and he also wraps a great shark rod.

Everybody back then wore those funny looking shorts

QUOTE ! see your in Venice, FL that's the first time I discovered shark fishing, those guys used to use bamboo for shark rods
with 16/0 senators with 20+ pounds of bait, the old garage bag to get the bait out. I bet they don't allow shark fishing from there any more.

ITS WASN'T BAMBOO ! IT WAS CALCUTTA RODS.
A 1'' 1/2 OD HAS A 1/4 ID.

Hi,
Just curious if anyone out there could tell me more about two Vintage Harnell rods I recently purchased. Both are pre black, red, yellow as they are Black with green thread wrapped around a gold foil. Model numbers are: 7627 6' 6" and 7628 7ft. Both are in original black Harnell cardboard tubing with light blue socks...all are in near mint condition...doubt they were even used. Other than being earlier rods and before they used the black, red and yellow, I can't find much about their history. They, of course, are two piece rods. Would also love to know the value of these rods to a collector....even though I couldn't see myself selling these beauties. Thanks, Greg
