Hello everyone,

I am interested in putting together a setup to catch some king kong sized sharks, pretty much always from the beach but also from a boat for big Boca Grande hammers at least every other year. I would also like this to be able to be used for the occasional goliath grouper outing when I am in Florida. What I am thinking is this:

Avet EX 80W (two speed, not T-RX)
750 yards of 200 pound JB hollow core and 250 yards of 200 pound mono
Custom 5'7"-5'9" blank through rod (planning on a 60-100 or 80-130 solid glass Rainshadow blank)

My main two concerns are the rod and the line. First, what guides should I go with on the rod? I don't know if full rollers are beneficial or not, especially on the beach - but I will probably need at least a roller tip for goliath grouper. Second, should I worry about cut-offs with braid in Florida? I will mostly be fishing in Sarasota, with trips to Boca Grande, the Keys, and perhaps a few other good LBSF spots within about an hour of Sarasota. I won't be making longer drops than 200-250 yards but if I hook into that once-in-a-lifetime hammer, I don't want to lose it because my line hits a reef or something.

Also - what is the potential size shark that can be brought in with an 80w? Could it handle a hammerhead over 12 feet, or would a 130 be necessary? I will ONLY be using the 80w when I get ahold of big baits. I will be fishing a pair of Avet LX's with 500 yards of 60 pound JB hollow core and 100 yards of 40 pound mono for the majority of sharks I hook into, say anything under 8 feet.

Thanks and tight lines,
Drew

I am building a shark rod that will have a Avet EXW 80 strapped to it. I have the blank a gator glass Tuna72 6'0 unlimited, but can't seem to find a reel seat or gimbal to fit. On the blank that I want to mount reel seat is measured at 1.135" and the bottom where the gimble would mount is 1 1/4". I have tried aftco, but their biggest gimbal won't fit and am not sure if the 4m reel seat will work. If any of you rod builders could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

As you might know they primarily cruise along the bottom looking for food. I have caught many and they are fun but I'm looking to catch some hammerheads and tigers. Any descriptions or pictures will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am needing to replace my current shark rod/reel set up. I actually got into surf fishing when I found a Shakespeare Tidewater 10' rod washed up on the beach on a morning walk. I have been using that for 2 seasons now but the guides are falling apart and I feel I can now step up in quality after having a little experience now. I have been doing hours of research but am feeling overwhelmed and frustrated on my options. I'm a 5'5" 135lb female. My current set up I can fight the sharks by putting the butt on my upper leg/abdomen and the reel is in a comfortable position (left handle, spinning reel). I only cast the baits out so I can't get a lot of distance with the current rod. I thought it might be best to step up to a longer rod, 11' or 12'. From researching I guess I need a Heavy or Mod/Heavy Power with Fast or Mod/Fast Action. My fear is the 12', or even the 11', might be too much rod for me to handle and load the cast. I see the longer rods have much longer butts and therefore would have to put the end between my legs instead of on my abdomen during the fight? I also want to get a 50/50 split since I have to store it in my little one bedroom apt. I would prefer to stay under $200, am willing to go a little more if it is significantly better for me.

As for the reel, I currently have a CXM80 Bass Pro reel. It's way out lived its life. I want to switch over to braid too. I'm leaning towards the Fin Nor LT100. These are my current options that I've narrowed it down to:

Fin Nor LT100: $107
Fin Nor OFS9500: $140
Penn Battle II 8000: $103

Then another question (I should probably start a new thread) regarding the brand of braid and mono top shot. Thought a 65lb braid would suffice, what size and length of mono? I know a stupid question, but will the knot connection of the braid and mono go in/out of the reel and rod guides easily?

Thanks in advance for your help!
Julie
