New 2014 Big Hammer Challenge measuring idea implemented

I believe that this year should be the first year of a new measuring technique for all sharks and it should become a rule. I remember in the past so many sharks being disqualified or many arguments throughout the tournament because sharks were improperly measured. Every team should have a pvc, or rebar piece, or anything to stick in the ground in front of the sharks nose. That way there is less danger with the sharks mouth during measuring, no sagging tape measures, no tape measures being wrapped around the sharks fat belly to add extra inches, no backwards tape measures. Heres a good example of what to do, (if the tape measure started at 1 not 3, as shown in the pic).

For example, not singling anybody out.

This is what I'm talking about.

This team had controversy over a 8ft 9inch bull shark that was a contender in the bull shark division during last years BHC.

I understand that it is difficult to measure sharks in the dark, waves, etc, but it will make it much easier and more of an exact measurement if every team was forced to measure their sharks as shown in the top picture. What do you guys think about making it a new rule for the 2014 BHC? Any suggestions?

It's a good idea but it will be useless if you can't get the shark's head in sand (like if it was too heavy to bring onto the beach). Also some spots and types of fishing don't have sand (bridges and piers).

Most importantly, you're right about the tape adding inches by being around a shark's belly (especially for big pregnant bull sharks).

Just an average fisherman.

I am in total support of this technique. The photo will be more objective then other techniques. I think its an improvement for our sport.

I also believe its not appropriate for bridges/piers/jetty, but its great for the sand. In reference to the big head issue.......a regular tape measure is also useless if the head is below the water, therefore I believe its a mute point.

I also believe you can get a better shot with less anglers fishing

It appears to me that the stake to nose method is the most accurate.

NEWLY REQUIRED MEASURING METHOD

30 INCH by 1 inch long FLAT WOOD STAKE -buy at Home Depot(furring sticks)used to secure drywall to block walls
FLAT WIDE MEASURING TAPE W RED MARKS AT EACH FOOT MARK(provided by BHC staff)
STAPLED 16 INCHES ABOVE THE BOTTOM

EXCELLENT IDEA TO USE THE WOODEN STAKE WHICH IS FLAT THE WIDE TAPE CAN BE EASILY STAPLED TO IT flat side VS THE ROUNDED PVC . THIS GAVE ME A BRAINSTORM TO SHARE WITH YOU BECAUSE WE ARE IMPLEMENTING THIS NEW RULE FOR THE 2014 BIG HAMMER CHALLENGE WITH THE ADDITION OF RED MARKS AT EVERY FOOT MARK ON THE WIDE TAPE PROVIDED TO EACH TEAM.

Now to the brainstorm ,,,,,in the above picture the rounded pvc pipe is leaning slightly away from the sharks head and the tape measure is set too high on the pipe and can give the shark an extra inch or two but if a flat wooden stake with a limited height of lets say 30 inches is required and the Required that the Tape be stapled 16 inches above the bottom then the tape will run along the mid section of most sharks and a true measurement is more possible .In other words the stake goes in the sand about 6 inches and the tape would be 10 inches of the ground and running down the middle of the sharks centerline and no possibility of gaining an extra inch.

Accurate picture taking and using correct angles will make our job of determining winners much easier.

Awesome post! We used a PVC pipe the last year we competed in the BHC and it worked great! A lot more convenient and its also great for teams that have smaller groups! As above one angler is able to measure a fish adequately!

I really love the Giant Tape Measures, wow wish I could get my hands on one of those. Ive seen the Stick implementation before as it is awesome. Heck if in the wash just modify the stick to a pitch fork for larger sharks. fix the pitch fork or spear in the sand in front of the nose, and measure to the tail.

This is probably not a good idea but I had to invent something that would work in the water as well as on land for when I wanted to go fishing with the wife and no one else was around, Something sturdy enough to stretch the tape measure with out the rod stick flexing, Here's what I used a 10lb. Round Iron Barbell, a 1" aluminum pipe jammed in the hole of the barbell and flared in the back with two clips at different heights for small and big sharks, Also riveted the banner on top for a clean visual, Hope you like it.

Which ever method chosen has to be put to the test with a few people and then implemented for the BHC. I will be happy to be put into the beta group.

Another good thing that I found to be a big help last year was measuring fish when you only had two guys on the beach. The PVC stake allowed me and garret to fish and snap pics with only one person on the camera the other on the fish this would have deemed impossible had it not been for the stake. More importantly I think everyone needs to realize there is never going to be 100% accurate or clear measuring especially when it comes to hammers that you don't want out of the water in the first place, try to get the best pics possible with the fish health in mind and fish hard so that a few inches wont even matter!!!
