We got spooled last night 80w!
I went out with my buddy last night and we dropped 5 baits. the 80w gets picked up faster than ive ever heard with a massive cuda out for bait. we instantly locked down the avet 80w and the monster hammer never even thought of slowing down. we got ripped so fast all the way to the knot while i was holding onto Adam and it snapped 150lb mono at the knot like dental floss. ive never felt more helpless while fighting a shark from the beach!

Sounds like a stud! Time to get a Makaira 80w or a 130 size reel.

Monster Hammers, the truly massive ones over 14 foot on any good day can melt even the best and biggest reel.Carl felt what I felt at Boca Grande when my Penn 14/0 was made to cry and it blew up from the massive pressure and speed it was subjected to.Cmoney will remember that night when he got spooled forever and will be driven to go back just on that one memory. Some monsters are not meant to be taken.

Shannon, I agree with you. The true monsters you cannot stop with any reel.
The Makaira 80w is a much more powerful reel than a 16/0. 700yds of 200lb braid backing with a 200lb mono topshot using 70+lbs of drag is more powerful than 1500yds of line with only a max drag of 35lbs. In my opinion, drag power is more important than "high line capacity".

Josh can you hold 70+lb of drag for 1 hour of fight? I think fishing with 50lb of drag is insane

What was your line capacity? Did you pack straight mono on your reel?

If you have a good harness, of course! It's your body weight holding the drag, not your arms. Adrenaline helps a lot as well.

Awesome story. I've had a similar but not so dramatic experience. My fish actually broke off. I was talking to an old time fisher guy in the Ft. Myers area about my experience. He said you will never stop a beast like that in a straight line.If she gets her head down and wants to go to Mexico, forget it. If you run sideways down the beach you will increase the effective drag put on that fish. So, 70 lbs becomes 140 odd especially when you have a lot of line out. A straight line has very little resistance, just imagine a big bowed line pulling sideways through the water.
The Guy makes me stand in front of him and asks me to push him backwards. I couldn't without getting stupid about it. He makes me stand in front of him and he swats me sidways with one hand. Of course I nearly fall over. "Gotta turn his head." He says.
The drag you are puting on by bending the line also takes pressure off your reel.
You guys are the experts though and I am probably not telling you something you don't already know. But I can't wait to try it the next time I am getting run out. I just think that you gotta try something in that situation.
I think what Josh is saying is that in today's Reels Market, Makaira would've been the best candidate for that shark. Problem is, it was never truly proven yet. However, what i can tell you is that the best balanced drag/cranking power reel that's commercialized in today's market - is Makaira. For those of you who have one, do a test; lift 40-50lb dead-weight from the ground with a 16/0 just by turning the handle, then try that in lower gear with Makaira. I'm sure you'll notice the difference. While i never hooked into a monster like that with these high-tech reels YET, i'm sure that the one that's going to bite my hook will have the hardest time of her/hes life to get away - if that. Not trying to knock down Penn's reputation here, but in today's world market, progression is money - and the internal design of Makaira, brings reel design manufacturing into a whole new level. Not that they design it, (Tiburon did) but they had the big pocket for mass production. FYI - try Tiburon's SSTs - you think you know reels? Try an SST and let me me know if you are still in that WOW zone.
