September 2015: lost 'em all

I went out a few times in last month. Hit the local spot on the outgoing tide and the low tide.

9/12: I hit the sand right behind some severe storms. The storm was to the NE of my spot. When I got to the beach, I waited for a few minutes before I unpacked, then waited for a few before I ran the bait, I watched the storm to make sure I was in the clear. I got a bait out and was chillin then a new storm was forming to the south of me, little more inland. I was ready to get the hell out of there but I didnt even want to stand by the fishing rod. I decided to lay down in the kayak for a little bit. I would not even get up to get another beer or my camera to take some great pics of the storm. It was intense. I had even seen lightning jump from one storm to the next across a clear sky.
The storm to the south dissipated and the first one moved farther offshore. I was able to relax. Got a couple cool pics.

The rod got bumped and then within a minute the reel was screaming. I waited a few seconds and set the drag on that big circle hook and I am pretty sure the fish took off even faster and then after 5 or 7 seconds, NOTIN!
I reeled in a bare hook, but it was smaller then when I had dropped the bait!

9/20: I ran out for bait in the AM and didnt have any luck. Water was up around 86 degrees inshore. Went back out before dusk and took the yak to the jetty. I lost a cuda but it was ok b/c I had a chunk of bonita in the truck.

It was gettin dark so I ran back to my beach spot and put a bait out on the penn 10500. The rod went off at 9:17PM and the fight was on. The fish was strong with a solid run but I had him turned around and just on the other side of the bar. One more run and some shakes and he was gone. Damn fish spit the hook at 9:22PM. As JD Hammer would say, I went home sick.

9/24: I took a file to the hook that the fish spit out. It was an LP 18/0. It was sharp before but now it was super sharp. I took my dad out shark fishing for the first time. He was pretty funny talkin about yakin out in the dark and the waves and what not. There was swell but no waves. Just a big clean ground swell. His bait on the Penn 10500 got picked up first. I set the hook, put on some drag and handed the rod to pops. He was surprised. The fish was going strong so we applied some more drag. Dad was gettin rocked so I took over, applied some more drag, then some more. The fish had taken over 200 yards of line at thing point. I had him stopped and he was pissed and thrashing. I got a few yards of line back after a couple pumps and just as I was going to hand the rod back to dad, the fish took off and didnt stop and the line popped on the shallow bar about 350 yards out. I know that it what happened b/c I got just about all my line back and I know the area from fishing in the yak.

It was probably a stud lemon but Dad swears it was at least 12' long LOL.
Later on the next rod went off and we put pops on a solid tipper.

No monsters landed that month but there was some action. I didnt even hit the sand that much since September and August are slow down here.

that hook was a 24/0 I got on eBay. It was labeled as the Whooper Stopper. I dont remember a brand name. I got a lot of fish on that same hook. A guy from TX said there was a bad batch around b/c the same thing happened to him and another guy but that he typically had good luck.
