June 2015 report. Epic two weeks of shark fishing!

This has been the best two weeks of fishing for me EVER. A couple days in a row, I walked into work at 830AM on 3 hours or less of sleep. We put multiple fish on the sand 4 days in a row. 2015 is awesome!

6/7/2015: Hit the sand right at dusk. Dropped a couple baits, cracked a beer and chilled with a few people. My reel went off just before high tide and the fight was on. Solid fish, pulling a little drag now and then and really thrashing around and shaking that head. Ended up landing my biggest bull to date at 8'7" and FAT. My first bull over 8' and I could not believe how big that head was. Took my hook back, got some pics and tossed her back.

Couple minutes later Chris' small combo goes off but it is dropped. I run out another bait. While I am on my way back in, Chris's 80W goes off. I come back to shore and it is all go go go. Chris had hooked up to a BIG Tiger shark. The fish is the biggest thing I have seen in person. It had a stubby tail (10'7") but was 9' at the fork so the fish was an est. 11'6". The shore break had really picked up and we were getting thrashed around pretty good. Did not get the best pics or the hook back. We cut the wire, taped her, got the pics and brought her back in. Before we knew it, we were in chest deep walking her out. She took off strong.

I ran another bait and finally sat down for the first time all night.

Chris got picked up on the small combo again (as he reached for it to take it back in for the night) and the fish was burning this drag down. The 65LB braid eventually popped. He thinks it was a hammer.

No bites after an hour so I packed up.

6/8/2015: I went back out with my buddy Pete. My bait got picked up around high tide again. This was a feisty fish, rippin some drag for a short while. We thought it was a hammer. Then it slowed down to heavy and head shakes so we thought bull. She pulled the drag again close to shore as expected. My buddy yells "TIGER" and I am friggin stoked. This is my first tiger. 3 years in the works. Even on the sand she still has a little fight in her. I got my hook and some pics. No tape, didn't care. First tiger, solid fish! Did not get the clear trophy pic but it was all good. Went off strong as expected.

6/11/2015: SKUNKED. I met up with Willowcatfish. We had a good time frame for a low tide bite and a good weather forecast at my local spot. The forecast LIED. The supposed SE 5MPH winds were actually over 12MPH E winds. The seaweed destroyed us. My truck was in the shop so I borrowed one, forgot my wheels for the yak, runnin multiple trips b/c of the sidewalk. Lot of work, no reward. We still had a good time talkin sharks, gear and flatheads (catfish). A couple of the locals came out and were entertaining to the say the least. The cops even showed up to kick us out but they were cool after we talked. They gave me the 411 on the parking tickets and the city's plans and how they want everyone off the sand at night. Annoying.

6/12/2015: Met up with Pete to drop some baits. It was a late high tide so we made sure to get fresh bait in the water an hour before then. Midnight comes around and he drops a new bait. Then I drop my bait. A few seconds after I drop my bait there is a huge crash in the water. I turn to my right and 15' from the yak there is a big disturbance in the water. First time in a long time that I have been scared out in the yak. When I get to shore he yells to me "Check your drag" and I notice he is hooked up! He said the fish picked up his bait just as I dropped mine, then he set up on the fish after throwing my reel in gear. When he set the hook, the fish went nuts and that was when I heard it crash the surface! He ended up getting nice tiger, not a monster but it was beautiful with great markings.

The wind was really picking up and the water got rough and choppy. I cracked open a coke and packed up when I finished it.

6/17/2015: Truck is still in the shop so I could only fish if I borrowed a truck or met up with someone with a yak. A couple of my friends (Adam and Kelly) wanted to go so I said "You bring the yak and a paddle and I will bring everything else." I put out a couple baits and the spinning gear gets hit. This was a short drop, like 50 yards. The bait is picked up and the fight is on. A couple solid runs, then the side to side game. Had to go over a line and under a line multiple times. After some time, I got the leader, Adam got the tail and now Kelly has landed her first shark from the beach. A fat 8' lemon at that.

6/18/2015: Awesome night! I brought the 50W to cover the short drop and Pete brought the 130 for the long drop. (always hear stories about BIG fish comin in close) There were already some people on the beach but Pete knew them so we just set up to the north of them. I guess the big girls were out far this week. Pete got a BIG tiger early on (easy 10.5' or 11'). One of the other guys lost a good fish when the line popped after diggin into the spool. I got a little tiger on the 50W. This was the first fish on that combo. It was fun! A couple more hits for the hour. One of the other guys landed a lemon, and then just before the end of the night Pete got hooked up with another big fish. It charged the beach on him then turned but the 130 subdued the fish quickly. It was another Solid Tiger (easy 10'). Call me the historian b/c I was on photo detail for the great catches! Hopefully next time someone will be takin my pic with the big fish.

6/19/2015: I got a small Tiger. She took off when I set that hook. Then once she turned around it was dead weight with some head shakes. She had an old hook in her that we were able to remove before we got my hook out. Shortly after that My buddy's spinning rod went off and he landed a solid tipper. This was his first shark (besides a sharpnose in December) The bite ended just as fast as it started so it was taco bell time.

6/20/2015: Hit the sand for one last Hoo Rah! for the weekend. Took two friends and met up with Chris Licht and the Fam., Got three baits out. Two close and one far. Adam landed a nurse on the spinning gear.

After that, my 130 went off on the long drop. I let the fish eat and then set up on her, She fought for a minute and then spit the bait. Big bait and a little fish LOL. As I am about to run another bait, I tell my friend Crystal to keep an eye on the 80W. It was her rod for the night, it is currently the only bait in and it is my lucky bait! As I am runnin a bait for Adam, the 80W goes off, I jet back in on the yak, run over there and the reel stops. I bring in some slack and the fish is nibbling. She then changes direction and I set up on her. While I am gettin this fish hooked up, I have my friend Crystal strap in to the shoulder harness and get a spot on the sand b/c she is about to be clipped in. The fight is on! After about 15 minutes she is on the sand. Get her taped, get the hook and some pics. The fish was tired so we revived her for a minute or two and She Gone!

I get 3 more baits out, finally sit down for the night and bam, the spinning rod goes off. Adam lands a fun spinner shark.

I never got my own fish that night but fun was had by all!

This will be two weeks that I will never forget. Still on the hunt for the monster of my own. Maybe I can get one before the end of the month and add it to this report!

Here fishy fishy fishy.....

Ohhh yes. It's been epic. Best early summer shark fishing I've seen in years. Got my first tiger over 10'. One of the coolest shark encounters I've ever had. Hopefully the remainder of the season holds up!
Tight lines guys!!

The pic of you in the water releasing that tiger is awesome! You must of had a nice bright light to get the water lit up like that?
